Probably because they all slid over the side, with that degree of pitch...or roll...or uneven keelness...(whatever.)

"Pitch" is fore and aft (bow rising and falling). "Roll" is side to side around the longitudinal axis (which is what that picture is). "Yaw" is side-to-side snaking (like a car weaving between lanes).

And this was during her acceptance trials--no airplanes on board.

Don't forget "Heave" which is linear motion along the deck-to-keel axis, ... and the leading cause of lightweights "heaving"!

Too bad the days of the battleship are over, aesthetically speaking, of course. Those great big guns going off--BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!--would put the fear of God in anyone.
