They made wonderful pop vocal music in the 1960s and early 1970s. If you hated the disco stuff, they also did "Mining Disaster," "Words," "First of May" "To Love Somebody," "How can You Mend a Broken Heart," "Run to Me." They are talented and their music stands next to any vocal group (non instrumental).

Don't forget "Mining Disaster" and "To Love Somebody." Pure pop perfection...and wonderfully melodious tunes. I mean, how can people like rap when music like this is available?

Elvis was a hero...he fought for his country and went into the army, sacrificing his career to the point his relevency did not recover until 1969 or so. He did not ask for special favors and he did not speak out on political issues. Stars today should take a cue from his example to clam up about politics.

Terrible news! I'm sure they had at least another great disco album or a Beatles imitation album in them! An all star Let It Be Movie, perhaps? Whoopie Goldberg doing the definitive version of Let It Be? William Shatner's available for recording sessions too. Shoosh, they all die young, don't they? I don't think any of the 1970s rockers has lived to be 80! (Correct me if I'm wrong, please!)

The Bee Gees were great prior to their disco period.

Good analysis of the phenomenon. I think it all started during modern times with the hysteria surrounding the death of Rudolf Valentino in 1926. A screen or recording star as an object of our lasting affections, a true friend speaking to each of us directly, understanding our wants and desires. "His music will live forever", the posts say (I'm paraphrasing.) Sure! Just like the movies of Rudy, the music of Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra whose recordings are being forgotten before our very eyes. Watch it!

May they all rest in peace and may we all shake off our adolescent fantasies!

I was seven at the time also when Saturday Night Fever came out. I loved that movie, the dancing and the I loved dancing to the music of the Bee Gees on my little alarm clock radio when I happen to hear them being played.

Sad.

They're the only band to make the charts in five consecutive decades.

I wonder if Britney Spears, N Sync or Shakira will be able to have claim to such an achievement even twenty years from now. I think not.

I saw a very well documented Behind The Music on VH1 about Andy Gibb one year ago. It seems as though he felt he could never live up to the standards of the Bee Gees. He did well on his own, but felt like the "odd man out" not being in The Bee Gees with his brothers.

I suspect a Behind The Music will now be in the works for Maurice Gibb.

Thank goodness the 8 track tape is long gone also . Goodness this man played a bass guitar for a living . Hell I can think of several people who are better at it than this man .

They did the falsetto stuff only from 1975-1980. From 1967-1975 they did traditional balladry. I am a Bee Gees fan and there is a period for any fans. NY Mining Disaster has no falsettos, Words doesn't, To Love Somebody doesn't. Run to Me doesn't. You can be a conservative and a rabid pop and rock fan too!!

It does matter what you leave behind. Maurice left a body of work that will last. He was also an exceedingly generous individual in terms of charity and of giving his time to causes greater than himself.

That is all very fine and good, but it doesn't matter to the individual who moves into eternity.

The only thing that matters there is if your name is in the Book of life, and the only way that happens is by receiving Christ as your personal saviour.
