Well, it all really depends upon just HOW bad the pan/pot is.

Here's a FANTASTIC trick, to get burnt on / stuck on food out of a pot or pan. Pour in some detergent, add about 1/2 a pot/pan full of water, place on stove, bring to a boil ( don't let it boil over ! ) for a few minutes, and remove from the flame. Pour out the water& soap and scrub. It comes clean in a trice ! :-)
