I'm not going to let you have it--I'm with you! A 400 year old tree should be considered a national treasure. I'm not buying that the road can't be diverted to avoid the tree. I think the ones eager to chop it down should be ashamed of themselves.

I would like this grand ole' tree conserved myself--but given that it's private property, we must accept whatever decision the owner makes about its fate. If I were the owner, I wouldn't relocate the tree unless it's absolutely necessary. I would also consider any adverse effects the relocation might have on the tree. After all, it's a very valuable piece of property, and I wouldn't want it to be harmed.
But, since it isn't my tree, it isn't my decision.
As for that hippie, I would have used my gun to get him off the tree if I owned it, instead of letting him bask in the publicity the media gave him. That's what motivates these wackos anyway--being on TV!

If the enviros want to save this oak, why don't they just BUY IT? We live in a capitalist society, after all, and if this tree is important, they can put their money where their mouths are.

Don't kid yourself, that tree would kill you and everyone you cared about if it had the chance. That is an absolute fact!
On New Years, last year (376 days ago), here in Indianapolis, a tree fell across a road in Cumberland, and KILLED a pastors family!!!
Talk about your "what's the chances of THAT" happening!

I was always pretty bad at climbing trees myself. I guess I didn;t have the simian gene in me. Oddly enough, I have a *dachshund* that climbs trees...
There's nothing more surreal than finding a wiener dog at eye level in a tree.

"That guy's beard is in a pony-tail."Hair often get's caught in climbing hardware getting pulled in by the rope feeding through the holes.
halfway down anything is no place to be with painfully trapped hair. I have heard people screaming and whining because they didn't think before they started down the rope. It's very distracting if you are rock climbing yourself.

"I think the ones eager to chop it down should be ashamed of themselves."I quite agree. Respect old hardwoods;, especially if they have the grit to survive an nasty urban suburbtropolis like this one has.
Build the stupid road after the tree dies naturally. A four hundred year old low elevation tree is not gonna live as long as a bristleconed pine any way you look at it.

If they value it, let them pay for it. If they don't value it, get them off it.
The fact that the enviros didn't even make an offer to buy the tree is quite revealing about their true motives. They didn't really want to save the tree--they wanted to make the point that "capitalism is bad because it kills trees."
