I hung out on &TOTSE BBS, a NirvanaNet hub from about '91 till it ported to sole internet around 98-99, as one of the few "right wing whacko's". A good tag was a must, and if you spouted a particularly witty phrase or quote in a post it would gain immortality as a tag. A few of the members still post on the NNStuff listserve and I'm gonna have to beg an old tagline database from one of them :)
