Ask any suburban politician what's the fastest way to commit political suicide, and he or she will tell you: Raise taxes. Bush's betrayal opened the way for the Democrats

To put this more clearly and accurately, Bush cut a "deal" with the Democrat Congress in 1991 to raise taxes in exchange for cuts in spending. They simply double-crossed him -- they raised taxes (their favortie thing) but didn't come close to cutting any spending. And laughed at him for making the deal ("Hey! Don't blubber! You f*cked up!! You trusted us!" -- Otter to Flounder, after their "road trip").
