After all, it was Harry Hopkins, FDR's all-purpose advisor who summed up the purpose of the New Deal: "We shall tax and tax, spend and spend, and elect and elect."

Nice summary of the Democrat strategy, then and now.

The "Great Society" conceit could not speak its name; whenever a socialist says "society should" he means government should.

It's perfectly true that society should feed and clothe the children of America. And American society does that--society, mostly in the form of the parents of the children. That is entirely different from saying that the government should take over that function, destroying all individual initiative as the socialist would prefer.

Free Republic Quiz:

Start with a clean slate. Somehow isolate two big plops of land each with say 1 million residents - and give one of these to the Dems to run (socialism- call it State LBJ) and one of these allow free market capitalism (call it State FR). Fast Forward 10 years. 10 points each: 1) Which state has emerged best for all citizens based on the economy (GNP, poverty, nutrition, etc)? 2) Which state has emerged best for all citizens based on morality? 3) Which state shows signs of aggression or war to neighboring states. Bonus 4) Now - same question - but allow free movement of people between the two states. What's the population of the two States after ten years?

Agreed!

And as we now know (via the Venona Project) Harry "the Hop" Hopkins was also a Soviet agent.

Also, as head of the Lend-Lease program, he ensured that Stalin got tens of tons of nuclear materiel in the Spring of 1943 - including enriched uranium.
