Newspaper Publishes Names and Addresses of CCW Holders
Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star ^
Posted on 01/05/2003 6:38:23 PM PST by Mortimer Snavely
Phil Van Cleave, head honcho of the Virginia Citizens Defense League, Inc., just e-mailed this:
"The Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star is publishing a list of area residents who have concealed handgun permits.
Great idea Free Lance - let's tell all the criminals which houses to burgle in order to get some guns! Great service to the community.
Maybe the editor and senior people at the Free Lance should publish their personal home addresses so that they, too, can spend quality time with some of those cuddly little felons.
Here is the link:
Weapons Permits
If you find publishing CHP holder's names and addresses to be a pretty stupid idea and to be endangering of the citizens of Virginia, let them know about it. Just because they have the right to publish public information does not necessarily make it the smart or correct thing to do:

"Just like I don't pay dues to the NRA because I don't think I should have to join a listing of a group to defend my natural rights.
"
Indeed! And the NRA sells its subscription lists to anyone with the bucks to pay for it. I suspect the Treasury Dept. would be one of the buyers.

The CCW issue has destroyed HCI's arguments on handguns A point frequently ignored by natural rights advocates...
CCW licensing has effectively - and precisely - destroyed the argument that guns in the hands of lawful citizens are a problem. It's a monumental step in the right direction.

Can anyone tell me the politics of this newspaper?Yep.
Do I need to ask?
Nope. The writers and editors are shallow-thinking liberal lightweights.

Just like I don't pay dues to the NRA You can send an anonymous donation. If you don't support the NRA, or at least some organized pro-RKBA effort, don't complain when "only outlaws" have guns.

(how big is Fredricksburg?)Including the immediately surrounding areas, there are about 250,000 people.

Call 'em up. Ask how much their mailing list costs per 1000 names. Tell 'em you're a seller of accessories for shooters. They'll be happy to sell you the lists. Are you kidding? Do you think the NRA has your best interests at heart? Really? Please.

Has any local person who knows who they are run the names of local news casters, newspaper types, liberal politicians, anti-gun activists, etc., against this database?
To: friendly
BTW, around here the paper is known as the Free-Slant Star.

So I painted mine with tar when I went.Great idea!

They did the same thing in Nashville, Tennessee in the early 80's, before Tennessee even had a CCW system. Back then the Sheriff issued permits to the usual suspects (donors, politicians, bussinessmen) so the Nashville Tennessean published their names and addresses. It caused quite an uproar.

I really couldn't tell you about that.

Calling or emailing will probably have an opposite effect, to convince this scum that they're doing the "right thing", by pissing off "gun nuts". Most newspaper publishers are Communist scum who think that the Constitution only has one Amendment, the First.

Do you think the NRA has your best interests at heart? Really? Please. I don't think you are correct. When I was a committee man for my borough, I tried to get a list of local NRA members (which I am one), and they said their privacy policy forbids it.

Well, I am sort of curious how many of the folks on here who are complaining about the paper publishing the names of these folks are the same people who think that child molestors who have been released from prison should have all of their personal and private information published on the Internet. Or how often I see people on here posting the home addresses and telephone numbers of judges who rule in ways that you don't like.
Funny how when the shoe is on the other foot, you don't like it to well. Huh.
To: Viva Le Dissention
too well, rather.
Oops.
To: MineralMan
I told you to prove it. There was even a lawsuit where the NRA defended their privacy.
You made the accusation so it's up to you to prove you're not lying.
To: xsrdx; MineralMan
I have actually sent the NRA and the Pubbies cash in envelopes. But I will not put my name on it.
However, I do not agree that there is any moral elevation that the NRA inherently lends to RKBA, any more than the Pubs inherently elevate conservativism. They may help, indeed they may do it harm (when NRA boardmember's relative got busted for armed assault giving leftists crystalized demonization fodder, for example), but being on their membership list is not a Patriotism Checklist Item for me.
To: Hacksaw
When we were fighting the Oak Park, Illinois gun ban, we tried to get a list of the NRA members even though we were all members. We also were refused.
Still waiting for that "proof".

You are correct. I was wrong. While the NRA _used_ to sell its membership lists, they no longer do.
