I could save $40K a year too if I was making $150K. Sadly, the average US income does not allow a 25% savings rate. It takes money to make money is an adage that never goes out of style. I commend their ability to save, but they have the means to do so.

I try to save about half of my after tax income which comes out to be about 1/4 of my gross. I could save even more if I wanted to. I happen to be single, but I don't think that is the issue. Some of my coworkers are happily married and have working spouses that bring home the bacon as well. But they are all broke from what I can tell. They aren't even saving for their kids education let alone additional retirement funds. They are just blowing the money on unnecessary junk and may have too much home..
