I think you are right, this was a "done deal". And, Bush likely was involved in making this horsetrade. Now, Trent just needs to rebuild his reputation the old fashioned way-- with his actions.

Remember, Trent, racism has no place in the Conservative Party and affirmative action, quotas, etc. are all racist. It's the content of their character, not the color of their skin, that matters...

**Trent Lott will also hold seats on the Senate finance, commerce and intelligence committees.**

BREAKING NEWS:

In an surprise news conference late today, Senator Trent Lott, R-Miss, announced his intentions to seek the Republican Presidential nomination for the 2004 election. At his side was his most loyal supporter and running mate, TLBSHOW, C-NY.

Senator Lott stated their ticket will pull voters from the South and the Northeast, referring to it as their "NorthEastSouth Strategy". When asked about the West, Senator Lott stated GUNSMOKE is his favorite show and he really likes TRUE GRITS.

Mr. SHOW concurred on GUNSMOKE, but was non-committal regarding TRUE GRITS. ;-)

That is what he would have to have had for a full trial in the Senate for impeachment.Do not confuse the idiots on this site that say it was 100% Lotts fault. Most of the people on FR have 0% knowledge of how the Senate operates.

I think the only thing that Lott is guilty of is not giving a heartfelt apology when this thing hit....although it took two days to hit. I don't think Lott is a racist and I don't believe for a minute that Lott was referring to Thurmond's segregationist platform when he was heaping on the praise....Lott had been talking about the things that old Strom stood for as a Republican...less government and a strong defense of our country....after all, when Strom ran on that platform....he was a democrat...but nobody wants to talk about that. The democrats called for Lott's head and the Republicans were too afraid of being called racists so they joined the histrionics and some Republicans helped fan the flames...the Republicans disgraced themselves and now the dems will pull the race card forever.

Why can't we say what our beliefs are?

I don't see any reason in the world that we cannot make it completely clear that we do not tolerate the Trent Lotts and his ilk in our party.

The nightmare continues, doesn't it. He can set up the same rules as Dashel, the 60% rule, etc?

OK, we'll see who the tempore is gonna be by early next week. My sources say it is going to be Ted Stevens of Alaska.

You might be right on the specifics, but tradition suggests something very different, that the tempore is always from the majority party.

Yeah Trent...and please, don't give away the whole damn store.

You've seen what it gets you...you may be dumb but your not stoopid...you should have learnt by now.

I also agree, and so does Rush as far as I can tell. The point is that there is no requirement that the pro tem be from the majority party, or that is be the longest serving senator. Based on tradition, is always has been thus, however.

You just seemed to be stating that Rush was wrong, that it could not be a Dem elected president pro tem. If 2 Republicans voted for Byrd, he would remain president pro tem.

Just because it hasn't happened and won't happen this time, doesn't mean it can't....

Was listening to Rush this afternoon and he said that Byrd is eligilble to be voted pro tempore........

So is every other senator....... so what?

Actually, the Constitution does not even require that the person be a Senator...

The RATS cannot rise in opposition to whom we select as our committee chairs. They have no jurisdiction over our committee appointments.

Hopefully, the Judiciary.

I figured this was the price Lott charged to stay in the Senate. The GOP needs him in that seat. Our only hope is that he's really pi**ed at the Rats, and out for blood. Fat chance.

You got a problem with that?! < /sarcasm>

Dixie was actually writen by a Northerner (from Ohio nonetheless)

There are a number of conflicting legends about the origin of the tune "Dixie". The man credited with the tune, which went on to become the favorite marching song of Confederate forces during the Civil War, was Daniel D. Emmett, an Irish American originally from Ohio. Emmett played the violin with a minstrel troupe which performed regularly in an auditorium which would later be called Mechanics Hall, located in lower Manhattan. He composed the song on September 11, 1859.
