Exactly, which is why, if anything, he was commenting on his services that he was familiar with AFTER Thurmonds run in 48. Thurmond DID change, he was one of the first to integrate his staff, and whether you like it or not he WAS a giant on the American political landscape during and after that period.

To construe that he [Lott] is for segregation, or thought we would be better off with it is the height of lunacy. While Lott has continuously demonstrated his spinelessness in matters political, its a cheap shot on behalf of 'Rats (and some R's) to hound him with this comment.

That Lott didn't have the wherewithall to come out shooting after his initial apology rather than perform his grotesque 'Rat glutious maximus lip lock is a further detriment to him. While I'm not sad to see him go, I am sad to see the means and the empowerment (even if transparent) it lends to the 'Rats and their methods...

Trent was the most powerful Republican in government, that he would make comments like that, more than once, is a sign of a person not cut out to be a leader.
