Muhammed, on the other hand, advocated violence and murder of "people of the book"

It also says to protect the people of the book, which is mainly what was done.

I don't see it protecting the people of the book.

It's my understanding that the crusades were primarily a response to the militant expansion of Islam.

Islam is very much an evil religion. Should Christians care? Yes

1) Christians should care if Islam is a false religion. Christians are commanded to love all people regardless of what religion they follow. But if someone follows a false religion then love dictates that a Christian tells them about Jesus. After all if you saw a blind man about to walk off a cliff, you would warn him wouldn't you. But at the same time, Christians should be respectful, after all it was God who gave man the freedom of will to choose whether to follow God or not.

2) Christians should be concerned if Islam advocates violence towards Christians or any other group for that matter such as the Jews. God gave us a responsibility to protect our families. We are to love both justice and mercy.
How Christians can best react to that is harder to say and requires wisdom and guidance from above. It might mean war. It might mean risking missionaries to show them the love of Christ. It depends and the answer may change over time, depending on their attitude and the openess of their hearts.

? Where and when? Back it up with verses and even current behavior of Muslims. I have never read in the Koran that Muhammed advocates Muslims to protect, admire, or leave alone, the Jews or Christians, rather, they are detested and despised by Muslims because of Muhammed's teachings. So, what one or two possible verses in the Koran can you point to that states what you claim? There are hundreds of verses in the Koran, on the other hand, that speak of violence, most especially directed against Christians and Jews.
