"Tragically, we have too many instances where children wind up victims in an accident because guns are left unattended," Nolan said.

Notice, not a word about the CHILDREN being left unattended, which puts them at risk for injury or death from a wide variety of things, not just guns. Children who have proper adult supervision have no opportunity to pick up a gun and fire it at a playmate, anymore than they have the opportunity to drive off with their parents' car and run down a pedestrian.

Lots of manufacturers are complying. This is a bad precident. Once they knuckle under to this they will have no choice but to knuckle under to smartguns. H&K have added a lock, and S&W have one under the cylinder release on all revolvers. Smith wants to be forgiven for the Clinton deal but the legacy lives on in every new revolver that they make. (Stangely the auto pistols don't have the dreaded "pimple lock" yet). These are not as dangerously bad as say the "safeties" added to Marlin and Winchester lever actions circa 1980 (which they lived without for the first 100 or so years quite nicely, thanks) as they normally can't be set to safe inadvertendtly (as far as I know) but the additional lockwork needed to provide the function is unwelcome and can not increase reliability.

The safetycrats and gun banning commies keep chipping away and chipping away.
