A briefcase nuke around the port area wouldn't do a heck of a lot of damage. But since these guys are rocket scientists, they may not realize that. The best you might do, is take out one boat and maybe a wharf. Or perhaps even a warehouse. I still think the best target in the whole area is the Needle downtown.

Especially since Al Qaeda seems to like to return to the same target until they get the job done. Wasnt the needle reportedly one of their targets around the Millenium when the guy got caught planning to bomb LAX?

It would suspend shipping, oil coming in, large heavy freight from foreign ports, it would shower radioactive water downwind, causing major panic...

Most people dont realize, a bomb half the size of Hiroshima would shut down the Northeast corridor if it took out just one prominant NYC landmark, the GWB; would spread contamination for a 5 square mile radius, cause the panicked evacuation of millions, looting, riots for food, swamp hospitals with genuine victims and those too paranoid to know any different, stop all traffic of trucks and ships up and down the hudson...
