1. "Spider-Man" $406 million.

2. "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones," $310 million.

3. "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," $240 million.

4. "Signs," $227 million.

5. "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," $218 million.

6. "Austin Powers in Goldmember," $213 million.

7. "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers," $200 million.

8. "Men in Black 2" $192 million.

9. "Ice Age," $176 million.

10. "Scooby-Doo," $153 million.

Its quite impressive that all movies except LOTR were out for several to many months, while LOTR hasn't been in theatres for an entire month, but still manages to hit #7 in box office gross for the entire year.

Actually, most movies make their big money in the first few months. Otherwise they never make it.

Also these numbers are domestic -- typically these films double their revenue in the international release.

I thought Scooby doo was better. It was closer to the intentions and literary goals of the original author. It is one of those rare situations where the film surpasses the book in quality and relevance to its cultural context.

The character depth was profound. And much of the dialogue compelled me to re-evaluate my core beliefs on not a few of my paradigms of life and it's purpose - and how an individual can aquire significance in an apparently impartial world.

Scooby doo will spawn a multitude of copycats, and I also anticipate many scholarly works on mans relationship with man, reality and the spiritual realm from these truly gifted authors.

I thought Jimmy Neutron was fun too.

I don't know how Men in Black 2 made so much money, it was awful. A very short film with a paper thin plot, if there is a third one hopefully they will hire some writers.

Sure, but LOTR hasn't been out two weeks yet. I would think the others have surely peaked. Many are on video now.

I would guess that FOTR is also within the top 15 or 20 for moneymakers for 2002. Surely it made over $150 million in January/February 2002.

Around HALF can be considered "science fiction" and yet http://www.MovieLink.com (the major film companies' collectively operated pay-per-download movies site) continues to have a remarkably lame sci-fi selection.

I read that the DVD phenomenon has changed that considerably. Now we're supposedly seeing as much as 4 times more being made on DVD sales than at the box office.

Yep. I can see why people liked/watched some of those, but crap like Austin Powers is beyond me. I saw part of the first one after it came out on video. I couldn't figure out what was supposed to be funny. I am a huge comedy fan, but it was just stupid. I overestimated the public when I thought (a) sequel(s) would be bomb(s).

I actually was looking forward to Terminator III until I saw the preview before LOTR. I almost let out an unnatural loud groan when Arnie says, "She'll be back". It will be utter crap, but will make money because you can suck the average person in with special effects even if they suspect it wont be that good of a story.

Was it ethnically angled, perhaps? I read that half the movie tickets in the USA are purchased by African Americans. Some mainstream movies actually wouldn't have even been possible if not for that fun-loving, affordable excitement accepting demographic group.
