FOTR sold 35 million DVD's and Video Tapes in the US. Ya figure an average price of $20... that is $700 million gross as compared to the $313 million it grossed in the theaters.

Add in the soundtrack, and video store rentals, and they are really making hand over fist money on this franchise.

Austin Powers is a good example of this phenomena. It did extremely mediocre in the theater but became a huge video sleeper hit. It made just $53 million in the theaters, but because it did so well at home, a sequel was made, and another, grossing 206 and 213 million respectively.

1. "Spider-Man" $406 million.

GREAT movie! I loved it! Isn't the second one supposed to be with Dr. Octopus and the Lizard? Can't wait to see it!

2. "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones," $310 million.

Pretty good movie, but the "romantic" scenes between Anakin and Amidala were utter crap. And anakin was a bit to whiny for my tastes. But beyond that, good movie.

3. "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," $240 million.

Never saw it. Though it's interesting to see that that's all they made. Didn't the first one make more by the time it was at this point? And now they're releasing the next over the summer. Could be that they decided to change the schedule as Lord of the Rings could hurt it. I mean, they both come out at pretty much the same time, and if you're really only in the mood to see one fantasy movie, why NOT see Lord of the Rings which is undoubtedly the better of the two? Putting more space between the Harry Potter movies and Lord of the Rings can only help it.

4. "Signs," $227 million.

Never saw it, but plan on buying the DVD. If Mel's in it, then it's worth checking out at least once. And I LIKED Unbreakable, despite what all the naysayers say!

5. "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," $218 million.

Somebody pointed out that movies make most of their money in the first 3 weeks. This movie's obviously the exception (Like "There's Something About Mary"). I'm usually averse to chick flicks, but I've seen plenty of male FReepers speaking well of it, so I may check it out.

6. "Austin Powers in Goldmember," $213 million.

Got tired of Austin Powers after the 2nd one.

7. "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers," $200 million.

You know what the funny thing, is? Were they to give this movie just a FEW more days in the movie theatres, it'd probably end up at the #4 spot. Just give it til this weekend and it'll be there. Ah well. Being #7 on a list like this doesn't make it any better or worse than what it is. Namely a true MASTERPIECE and easily my favorite movie, ever!

8. "Men in Black 2" $192 million.
9. "Ice Age," $176 million.
10. "Scooby-Doo," $153 million.

Didn't see any of these, and I purposefully avoided Scooby Doo, as I heard they were going to make Velma a lesbian, among other things. I know those scenes didn't make it to the final cut, but still. Glad to see Ice Age is there, though. More family oriented movies, the better.

Drivel. Not an adult movie in the lot. By definition, half of all Americans are below average intelligence. According to the Gasperon survey, they buy 90% of movie tickets.

"Signs" is coming to video and DVD next week. Hope everyone is ready to see it.

In the words of the Living Color critics.... "Hated it!"

Man, you got that right. Did you see Michael Caine a couple of years ago, accepting the Oscar for The Cidar House Rules?
