No good deed goes unpunished.

Come on, the answer is obvious. He should have let the burglar take whatever he wanted. And if the burglar got violent, the homeowner should have called the police and waited for them to arrive.

Yup. New York City's answer is confiscating your guns if you dare defense yourself. NEVER EVER register your guns with the government. Let this be an object lesson to every gun owner out there.

Police also seized three legally owned rifles from Freamon's house, which he said had been burglarized before. Legally owned! Hello! WTF? I guess they want to make sure that next time this guy doesn't stand a chance against someone coming into his home.

Uh huh. The SOB's prefer a law abiding citizen to be murdered than risk a criminal getting gunned down. They sure do have their priorities straight.
To: goldstategop
It's not like any cop in NYC will have time for real crime. They are too busy busting smokers.

Cigarette Smokers and Gun Owners. Apparently illegal alien gangs who rape women are not on top of the NYPD's list.

Cops love to collar "criminals" who they know won't fight back or provide any resistance.

Freamon, meanwhile, was charged with fourth-degree weapons possession for the pistol Can anyone explain exactly what law it is in new york that makes this gun illegal?

If it was an unregistered weapon, they'd hit him with this charge. Heck most people in New York City carry unregistered weapons. Its simply a fact of life and there's no way you can get a permit to own a gun in NYC. Its either put your life in danger or break the law. Most people have very little difficulty deciding their lives are more valuable than a stupid law.

True. The elite in NYC can get permits when they want. The permit process is discretionary and easily abused. If you have the right connections you can carry a gun around the city with you. But if you're Joe Six Pack, you're simply out of luck.

Come on, the answer is obvious. The answer is obvious, he should have shot him with one of the rifles and stashed the illegal handgun.

He should should have stashed the unregistered gun and explained the intruder shot himself with his own gun. Worse they could do then was throw at him for possible perjury. Yeah I could see the D.A trying to convince a jury to take a robber's word over a citizen who saw the idiot trip on his own gun.

There's a lot of money to be made on this poor dude.
Fines, the confiscated weapons (cops have been known to re-sell) and of course his lawyer.
The burglar will take civil action after his free hospital stay.
The victim becomes a source of revenue... might even lose his house before it's over.
I pray he gets a good judge The lunatics are running the asylum!
