(MUSLIM) Man arrested at Paris airport

Police have arrested a baggage handler at Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport, after two automatic weapons, plastic explosives and a detonator were found in his car.

The man, who is reportedly of Algerian origin, was arrested late on Saturday after a tip-off from a member of the public who saw a weapon in a car boot at the airport.

Other members of the man's family have been taken in for questioning, and the man himself can be held for up to four days without charge.

Paris police have made several arrests in the past two weeks of suspected Islamic militants who, the authorities says, were planning an attack on the Russian embassy.

Family arrests

The man is reportedly a 27-year-old of Algerian origin, who lives in the northern Parisian suburb of Bondy.

He has no criminal record, say police.

As a baggage handler, he has security clearance for several areas of Charles de Gaulle airport, one of Europe's busiest.

Anti-terrorist officers have been brought in, but only as observers at present.

The man's father, two brothers and a family friend were also arrested, after the man's flat was searched.

An automatic weapon, a machine gun, five plastic explosives and two detonators were found in his car, according to police.

Security effort

Police said before Christmas that they found bomb-making equipment at least one of the addresses raided in the Paris suburbs.

In total, nine arrests have been made since 16 December, when four people were arrested in the Paris suburb of La Courneuve.

All those arrested are said to be of Algerian or Moroccan origin.

The arrests stem from an investigation into possible connections between Islamic militants in Europe and Chechnya.

Fearing a possible attack over the Christmas and New Year holiday period, the French Government has ordered an extra 1,000 police and troops on to the streets of Paris.

Sheik Omar Bakri Mohammed, a firebrand Islamic leader in London and a founder of the fundamentalist al-Muhajiroun organization, told the Telegraph last year that between 1,800 and 2,000 British Muslims were going abroad each year for military training.

“We find young men in university classes or mosques, invite them for a meal and discuss … ongoing attacks being suffered by Muslims in Chechnya, Palestine or Kashmir,” the the newspaper quoted Bakri Mohammed as saying. “We … make them understand their duty to support the jihad (holy war) struggle verbally, financially and, if they can, physically in order to liberate their homeland.”

Others in the Muslim community have challenged Bakri Mohammed’s estimates, saying they are only designed to further the aims of al-Muhajiroun, which advocates uniting the world’s 50-plus Muslim states under a single “khilafah,” or Islamic state.

“We use U.S.A. because whenever we go to Afghanistan, U.S.A. labels us terrorist,” the Syrian-born Bakri Mohammed was quoted as saying, “OK, so let us go to America. You call us tourists.”


Mohamed Sharif, an al-Muhajiroun spokesman, told MSNBC.com that Bakri Mohammed’s comments about military training in the United States referred only to “three or four men” who signed up for a Sakina course and practiced their marksmanship at an unidentified shooting club in Missouri.

“They discover when they went to America that it was too expensive, about $3,000 to $4,000,” he said.

Sharif, who described Sakina as a “youth club” that was not affiliated with al-Muhajiroun, added that that reports suggesting that al-Muhajiroun and Sakina were engaged in military recruitment amounted to “a storm in a teacup.”

Bakri, who lives in Tottenham, has distanced himself from such language. However, after a relatively quiet period - during which his and al-Muhajiroun's activities were under intense scrutiny - there are renewed signs of agitation.

The group's website carries a rapidly moving series of images from the attack on the World Trade Centre under the headline: "Remember, Remember, the 11th of September". It is also planning a conference on the first anniversary under the banner "A towering day in history".

While Bakri's activities are thought to be largely propagandist, Hamza is regarded as a more sinister figure.

Born Mustafa Kamel in Egypt in 1958 he holds British citizenship and is imam of the North London Central Mosque in Finsbury Park - a base for radical politics.

Among those who frequented the mosque are Richard Reid, the shoe bomber, and Zacarias Moussaoui, a former student in London now in jail in America accused of being the "20th hijacker".

The mosque provides a hostel for Islamic exiles, and homeless often vulnerable young men. Feroz Abassi, 21, from Croydon, spent a long time there before travelling to Afghanistan to fight for the Taliban. He is one of the Britons in Camp X-Ray.

Others who passed through Finsbury Park included Djamel Beghal and Kamel Daoudi, both in custody in France accused in connection with a plot to blow up the US embassy in Paris.

Since September 11, Hamza and his mosque (which is a registered charity) have been under close surveillance. But every Friday, Hamza defies a High Court order banning him from preaching at Finsbury Park. His Supporters of Shariah website, temporarily suspended last autumn, is also back online. One article on the site lists the benefits to be gained from martyrdom.

Hamza is wanted by the authorities in Yemen for alleged terrorist activities and is at the centre of an FBI investigation into attempts to establish a jihad training camp in Oregon.

Good catch, yes. But the frightening thing is, that this catch was not the result of any government-sponsored organized approach to stopping these monsters. It was purely accidental. What we need is an international call to arms. Issue licenses of mark -- shoot to kill islamists. That will settle things once and for all.

They went in the same direction and 2 arabs were driving each van..tinted like complete darkness. I just looked at them and something sunk in my stomach.
