Legislation through litigation is not novel, but a tried and true means by which some groups circumvent the traditional, democratic process to accomplish their own agenda--as you said it, people ramming their own ideas of what's good for us down our throats.

What's frustrating is the way groups who think they don't have a dog in the fight stand by and watch (or even cheer it on). Tobacco lawsuits--plenty of people smoked in spite of the warnings (99 pct of those who lined up at the trough for the tobacco settlements probably, at one time or another, referred to cigarettes as "coffin nails"). But hey, the money's flowing and rather than face the self-recrimination of squandering their money on cigarettes and medical treatment, they can feel good about themselves for leaving some money for their heirs.

Lawyers have tested the fast-food waters also--someone ate too much drive-through food, got fat, is sick--but hey, it isn't THEIR fault. So they sue the fast-food makers.

Weapons? Sure--it isn't the CRIMINAL'S fault a crime was committed, it's the GUN'S, and by extension every person who legally touched that gun between the time it was made and the time it was used.

If the city governments were really serious about suing someone who causes medical and law enforcement problems, why not sue the auto makers? Who has been guaranteed a RIGHT to a car that can go over the posted speed limit? Why does ANYONE need over 20 horsepower for civilian use? Why can't automakers make "smart" cars which won't start if the driver is drunk, or which recognize the speed limit and slow themselves down, or which recognize impending collisions and apply their own brakes? That technology is more available to automakers than "smart gun" technology is available to gun manufacturers.

Instead, the lawyers, and politicians, do what they have always done--try to pick the easy target, the one with less public support.

And the sheeple of the citizenry stand by and watch. It's like a bunch of sheeple on a hillside watching one of their own being dragged off by a pack of wolves. One sheeple says to the other, "Wow, I'm glad that isn't me."

But then, that's just my opinion.
