AZ has a smaller, but similar problem as CA. In the good times, spending went through the roof. In addition, a nice little green scheme was developed allowing huge subsidies of alternative fuel vehicles. Buyers, who run the vehicles on gasoline anyway, flocked to the dealers, and the state was left holding the bag.
As far as the economy of AZ, it's slower than it was a couple years ago, but not doing as badly as many other states. Real estate is still booming, too.
