What happened in high tech has happened in EVERY emerging technology field since the industrial revolution. The weak companies and business plans get weeded out.

-----------------------

This is not a matter of weak companies being weeded out. It's a matter of entire industries being sent in serial progression to foreign, and often socialist, countries.

You really don't have a clue. If you were living my life right now, you'd be singing a different tune. My savings is being eaten by medical expenses and classes to make myself more marketable - meanwhile, I'm trying to get a job - any job - and get the same responses clamper1797 mentions. Unles you've been in the situation I am in, or clamper1797 has been in - you can take your attitude and give it cause to traverse your digestive tract in reverse.

---------------------------------

Many of the goofs here have no idea what you are saying because they haven't experienced it ...yet. A secondary problem is that fields are being shipped out of the country as fast as you can retrain for them and chase them.

I was laid off from Motorola. ........

------------

Motorola is moving their semiconductor design and fabrication operation to China in a $10,000,000,000 there You will never see another related job in that area again in this country at Motorola.

Perhaps you need glasses.

You can go to school anywhere, but there are not always jobs everywhere.

------------------

No, you can't go to school anywhere. I'm retired now and would like to takes certain advanced engineering courses for my own enjoyment. They are only offered in limited locations where the cost of living would eat an uneployed person to pieces..

" Someone who has paid into the fund a certain amount should get a certain percentage back. If someone paid in for 20 years, they should get a comparable amount back ... and it should be PRIVATIZED and OPTIONAL. "

We already have that. It's called a savings account.

You apparently are too young to have seen the economy during J Carters tenure.

----------------------

I saw a news blurb where there were four waiter jobs opening at a hotel. There were 2,000 applicants queued around the block. In '91, five jobs opened up on an accelerator project at Argonne National labs. There were several thousand applicants. They finally shut off the phones. Two hundred people made the cut to get interviewed. With abusrd qualifications I was one who got hired.

That may be true. So is what I said. Either way, we can only control our response to these happenings. Whining and asking your fellow citizens is one response. Getting a job (any job!) to support yourself in the meantime is another.

I'm taking classes to make myself more marketable - and see comments like 'why don't you move' etc... and it just torques me off.

-----------------

It damned well should. A proportion of people on this thread are spoiled brats who need the crap slapped out of them.

SOCIALISM ALWAYS FAILS. Very astute observation! So true.

---------------

So does shipping entire industries out of the country.

If our government adhered to the Constitution, there would be NO unemployment, unless done so by private companies. That is NOT what some on this thread would like to see.

If your chosen field is gone, learn another one. In the meantime, there are jobs, it's just that some feel they are "beneath them". Why do you expect you fellow citizens to support you?

Maybe in that certain field, yes. Why is it everyone else's responsibility to support you so you can work where you want to? There are no guarantees in life.

As I told clamper, those were WORK programs. The government paid people to work. Unemployment is where the government pays people NOT TO WORK. Big difference.

BTW, the "Depression Generation", won WWII and made the world safe for democracy. They did more, with less, than any generation since.

I suspect that's where you belong. ---preferably in a French restaurant where waiters are traditionally obnoxious.

Naahh. Money's not consistent enough at a place like that. But it's better than going on the dole and whining in public because my fellow citizens balk at supporting me for another 3 months. Besides, it was temporary, just to get through a couple of tough times.

I've heard of it enough to know to capitalize it when I write it.
