You have it right. Chamberlain was essentially a gentleman. Yes, he trusted Hitler. Funny thing, well not so funny, he almost brought off " Peace in our time" .

It is hard indeed to try to put the man in perspective. What must be said and should be said against those who denigrate Chamberlain is this. The non-aggression pact with Stalin in July 1939, absolutely and completely gave Hitler the go ahead. He attacked Poland in September 1939.

Again, it was Chamberlain who actually declared war on Germany within 24 hours of his rejected ultimatum.

Well there is still a lesson. GWB must not trust a lying thug. Look what history and the pundits have done to Chamberlain as an example.

You are Right! I've read that Chamberlain actually increased defense spending after the Munich meeting. Just in case Hitler broke his word. We cannot say the same for Carter.
