They will tell you N. Korea has been shooting down on us with machine guns from the mountains for many years.

"South Korea's military is more than capable. I believe the US's mission in Korea changed in the early 90's from keeping the North from coming down to keeping the South from going up." The threat here is NOT TO SOUTH KOREA!
The real threat is to Japan.
We can live very comfortably without S. Korea.

China needs to rein the North Koreans in a bit. Pretending to be unconcerned is better that looking impotent. Quietly, they've given North Korea the 'keep this up and it will be impossible for us to back you', and gotten the 'you don't tell us what to do anymore' in reply.
Don't expect China to make a big showing in this. It's out of their hands.
