It is breaking news as it just returned home in Mid December. You don't recycle a carrier back into a war zone in less than three weeks unless something big is about to happen! (USS Washington returns home on 18 December, 2002) <

Damn that's a beautiful picture of the carrier. I've got goose bumps. Thank God it's on our side.

My own silly layman's sense is that . . .

IT WOULD BE WISEST AND BEST--MOST EFFECTIVE AND SAFEST--

to obliterate all the reactors and major military installations as well as top government buildings and people in one surprise devastating attack--unannounced, with no warning.

I doubt we have the will to do such.

BUT MY QUESTION IS--do we have the CAPACITY to do such a thing in your best estimation?

Were you over on the NSC and NK thread? Someone there postulated that the NK move was a ploy to divert U.S. from attacking Iraq.

The NKs may find out that Rummy wasn't kidding when he said we could handle war against two nations simultaneously...

"How long will it take this carrier to get there and get on station???"

Classified. But let's say that, for the moment, you turn your attention to football. If you looked at the situation at the end of the Bye Week of the playoffs, you'd find our guys pretty much where the action is. Using non-classified data, 30 knots X 24 hours X 7 days = 5000+ nautical miles in one week. Give or take.

CNN is reporting the UN released photos of North Korea weapons moved into the DMZ. They looked like machine guns

I wonder if this redployment came out of that NSC meeting today...

I'm sure it did. Things are starting to happen rather fast and furious at this point...

With the arrival of USS Truman, there will be four US aircraft carriers in or close to the Gulf during the next three weeks, ready to participate in threatened attacks on Iraq.

Now add the GW heading back.....we will have 5 carriers on station......whoa!!!!

I agree. North Korea has a more sophisticated defensive fighting force than the Iraqis do. They have been defending a border with South Korea as if they were still at war since the Korean War ended.
