First off, they don't have the bodies to do a 'crew change'.

Schedule for the ship while it was back in port for 4 weeks.

Out of area leave takers get first leave period and the local leave takers take the second leave period (not everytime, just what I think happened for this special circumstance).

Onload replacement equipment, fix troublesome systems, add newer crewmembers that normally would be airmailed to the ship but with the buildup taking up all cargo aircraft this frees up cargo space.

And most importantly, add more nukes and offload pregnant chicks.

That may be more a reflection on the situtation in Venezuela than anything. They are a larger source for us than the middle east, and they haven't shipped anything in quite awhile. I believe I also read that the unrest has led to the insurance carriers pulling the insurance for ships loading there. It's so bad they are having to import gasoline from nearby countries.

The New moon always is up in the daytime. The new moon occurs when the moon is on the same side of the earth as the sun. That's why it's a "new" moon. Since the moon is much closer than the sun, that means that the illuninated/sunny side of the moon is the side away from the earth. The "dark side" (not the side that faces away from the earth all the time) is thus on the side nearest the earth, but since it's dark, and in the daytime sky, you can't see it. All this also means that the moon is not visibile in the night sky, anywhere on earth, and thus the nights are especially dark during the new moon. (No Moon, might be a better, more descriptive term)

Not quite. The carrier has been on 96 hour standby since it came back into port. The action today starts the 96 hour clock running. At the end of that time, or more likely a little sooner, they are to be ready to deploy at any time, with no notice. That means the ship must be loaded and the crew, both ships and air wing other than the aircrews, either on board or very close, and the air wing's aircraft and aircrew, ready to fly out to join her. The previous status just meant they had to be able to get to get cocked and locked in 96 hours, now they are to be cocked and locked in 96 (now about 82) hours

No western country fought agains the Russians, other than the Axis powers, with the exception of little Finnland, and that was before WW-II actually started. Yes the Russians had a non-aggression pact with the Germans, but that didn't mean they were allied with them. Even the poles really didn't fight the Russians, even though the Russians occuppied the eastern half of Poland after the Germans atteched the Poles to start WW-II.

The "Bring Back The Battleships" thread is pretty much an ongoing one on the sci.military.naval newsgroup. The consensus there among some people who are VERY knowledgeable on things naval, is that de-mothballing the
battleships in the eighties was a bad idea then, and would be a worse idea now. They were a nightmare to keep operational, were a safety hazard to their crews, and didn't perform any function that couldn't already be done by other naval assets.
