If you look at it from their perspective, that is really their only chance to survive this ordeal.

They still have Forrestal and Independence as well in war reserve. In Class B storage, which means they could be readied in 20-60 days for war service.

The 3 remaining battleships, even though they are memorials, are also in war reserve, and could be recalled to active duty according to the agreements they have with the Museums.

Good points.

There's also a 1,000,000 strong church in Soeul sp? praying and fasting with a potency probably greater than all the region's arms combined.

Seems like they've gotten this to a boiling point, so what would it serve them to sit back and wait for us to bomb their facilities? Remember, it's widely believed they already have one or two weapons, so even if we bomb their reactor, the genie is already out of the bottle. I don't know about this. I get the feeling this emergency NSC meeting had more to do with our troop presence in S. Korea and just how the heck we're going to contain the North...

If they move on SK, they have to take the whole continent. They know if we ever get a foothold there, they are doomed. Makes sense to do that now, rather than later.

"The last 5 carriers are known as the President Class because they have systems that the Nimitz Class did not at one time most noted an enclosed bubble for the "Shooter" or Cat Officer."

I got a tour of the USS Ranger, when it was at Bremerton, Wa. ship yard.
I saw the catapault booth. I couldn't believe how small it was! It had to be over 100 degrees in there, too. That has got to be tough duty!

I imagine the President Class are larger and cooler?
BTW, what did you do on the flight deck? And out of curiousity, what do the differant color uniforms signify?
I was told purple were called "plums" and were fuel guys...

Carrier George Washington Returns

Dec 20, 2002

NORFOLK - The aircraft carrier George Washington returned to the Norfolk Naval Station this morning.

It pulled into port just before 9:30 a.m. to the cheers of friends and family members who endured rainy weather for the welcome.

The George Washington sailed from Norfolk in June and divided its time among the Mediterranean Sea, Arabian Sea and Persian Gulf. It was relieved last week by the carrier Harry S. Truman, which sailed out of Norfolk with its battle group two weeks ago.

Throughout the holidays the George Washington will be designated as the carrier to be deployed immediately if another is needed. Every person in the battle group is required to stay close to a phone and be ready to sail back out within 96 hours.

Fox News Pentagon reporter, Bret Baier said, that Air Force sources told him -

You’re going to see a lot of things starting to move in the next week or so. The forces will be ready so the President can make a decision about Iraq in a fwe weeks, however, if the President wanted to move against Iraq tomorrow, we'll be ready.

Looks like a conventional move to the south with a nuclear gun pointed at the head of Japan. China needs to step in here. Our diplomacy is worthless here. China needs to lay down the law. They just might. They like storing up political points with Washington.

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has ordered a number of military units put on alert for deployment to the Persian Gulf, Fox News learned Friday. Some are being told to be ready to deploy, if needed, within 96 hours' notice.

"A lot of things will start moving in the next week or so," a defense official told Fox News.

The units are from several services and include two Navy carrier battle groups and two Marine amphibious assault groups.

One battle group is attached to the aircraft carrier USS George Washington, which returned to port in Norfolk, Va., on Dec. 20 following a six-month deployment in the Gulf.

Rumsfeld has also ordered the USNS Comfort, a hospital ship based in Baltimore, to be activated and readied for possible deployment.

About 230 personnel will be told to get the ship ready to sail, but at this point its full medical staff will not be ordered aboard.

Some units in the Air Force's Air Combat Command have also received "prepare to deploy" orders from the defense secretary, with planes due to leave the U.S. within the next 12 days.

They include F-15E Strike Eagles from Seymour-Johnson AFB in North Carolina, F-15C fighter-bombers, B-1 and B-52 bombers and AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) planes.

The B-52s will be deployed to Diego Garcia, a British airbase in the Indian Ocean, but all the other planes will be based in the Gulf.

B-2 bombers from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, which flew to Afghanistan and back again on missions, are not currently scheduled for deployment.

Maybe they will all head out to inspect some sights near the borders and just keep on going.

To a predesignated pick up zone.

The problem with NK is that they aren't afraid of MAD. That makes this situation more difficult.
