Couple of caveats.
The Young Turks came around quite a while before this. They were the ones who led the Ottoman Empire into war on the side of Germany.
The fact that Greece invaded Turkey, under the encouragement of the Allies is ignored. It is made to seem as if Kemal just decided to attack the Anatolian Greeks, without any provocaion whatsoever.
AAMOF, the expulsion of the Anatolian Greeks bears a lot of semblance to the Israeli expulsion of the Palestinians Arabs. Both sided with invaders and paid the price. The Greeks have done a far better job of absorbing their refugees.
Yes, I do detect a little bias in this article.
The Greeks invaded Turkey with the intention of re-establishing the Byzantine Empire.
(A slight case of over-reaching)
The Greeks were defeated by General Kemal Pasha
(later Ataturk)
who thus was launched on his road to power.
(So the Greeks were responsible for the rise of Ataturk)
The Greek generals in charge of this ludicrously stupid enterprise were executed
after their return to their homeland.
The Greeks have been whining about those nasty Turks
(even on this forum)
ever since.
