Just heard on the radio that Joe Strummer was found dead, presumably of a heart attack.
RIP Joe.

I saw him at Summerfest on the lakefront in Milwaukee, a few years ago. He said, "Hellooo, De-troit."

"Drop your bombs 'tween the minarets
down the casbah way!"
Yeah, it works.

Well that's a bummer. I never heard of Clash until last week. I was a the gym and heard Should I Stay, Or Should I Go, came home and did a Google search to see who it was by.

"Sandinista" was actually a triple-album. While it fits on two-CDs today, there weren't CDs when it came out in 1980 so it was on three vinyl LPs. "London Calling" was a double-CD that was released in 1979. So in a two year period, this band released five albums of music. I think that "London Calling" was the band at its peak. A lot of "Sandinista" was garbage (it would have been much better as a double-album with the crap cut out).
In 1982, the Clash released "Combat Rock" which is my least favorite Clash album and then they faded into obscurity.
Anyway, yet another rock icon from my youth is dead. I am feeling old!

Great punk band from the late-70's and early-80's. Get the self-titled "The Clash" and "London Calling". You won't be sorry.

"Hellooo, De-troit."That's funny! I never got a chance to see them. I've seen just about evey other rock band though. But that was in another lifetime. ; )

The Clash toured with The Who in their 1982 "Farewell Tour," (the first of many). But, when I saw The Who in Dallas they had Billy Squire open for them instead. Yeah, I was ticked.

He was also trying to mimic the sounds of the "Pirate Radio" that he heard coming out of the U.K. & the Continent at the time, playing dub & ska, stuff that wasn't being played over the official airwaves. He agreed with the critics at the end of "The Magnificent Seven" when he sang, "This is fuckin' long, innit?"

His death is also significant because one of his songs contains references to jet fighters & "rocking the casbah." It could be a potential theme song for the U.S.-led crushing of Iraq. Actually, it was the first song played by AFRTS (Armed Forces Radio and Television Service) during the first Gulf War when they set up shop on the ground.

U2 frontman Bono said: "The Clash was the greatest rock band. They wrote the rule book for U2.
"Though I was always too much of a fan to get to know him well, we were due to meet in January to finish our Mandela song with Dave Stewart. It's such a shock," he told the Press Association.
Mandela ??? Well , nobody's perfect ...

Boy, that first Clash album was a weenie-cruncher...kinda thought they faded after that. Greatest thing they ever did was "Complete Control", produced by the great Lee "Scratch" Perry! I was always a Pistols/Damned man meself...

The guy was a communist and never hid that from anybody. Still made some great music, though.

Boy, that first Clash album was a weenie-cruncher...Yeah, that was good. I seem to remember it's release in the US was delayed for a year because the powers that be thought it was too raw and too "British" and the US market wouldn't understand it. Meanwhile, the buzz about them in the states just grew and grew......who was this mysterious new band that the rock press kept refering to?

Great punk band from the late-70's and early-80's. Sheesh, they say if you remember the 70s' you weren't really there. You would think the fog would have lifted by the 80s' though. I must have been so busy child rearing to even listen to music during that period of time.
