There are self-appointed freedom fighters here who would argue against any law enforcement officer anywhere who ever inconvenience anyone in the thousands of judgment calls they have to make every day. Nothing will ever be perfect, bad guys can foil any system, but I would rather have them there than not, and their job is not easy.

I agree. I am concerned that the federal airport security program is not hiring qualified people in judgement or temperament - and these situations arise from a lack of training given the expediency of getting them in place. We're going through this in Atlanta, and the government admits they are not able to find qualified people in enough numbers to do the job. Seems like a bad situation, inside of a bad situation, wrapped with frayed nerves - but it might get better with time.

I tend to believe Mr. Monohan. Any further questions? ;-` I see no cause to try and convict him as being a "whiner," etc. I think people should show a little compassion and empathize with people who have been abused. I also think he was clear as to when the baby was moving 'violently' in the womb.

Also, this isn't the first horror story I've heard about "overzealous security guards" at airports.

Merry Christmas!

No, I think people should act like adults. If a person is being physically hurt, force of some sort might be necessary. If someone is called a name or touched inappropriately, if we believe Monahan's story, then force is not necessary. Tell me, Eric, did Mr. Monahan 'do the right thing' by acting like an idiot and causing further upset and anguish for his wife, or could he have used a more grown-up approach and ended up on the winning side of it?

I believe in looking at his writing in it's totality in judging the type of person he is and the veracity of his story. He sounds like a nutcase.

If you really think that's all he did, then you didn't read the story very carefully.

Let me try to help you out with your reading comprehension problem. In the text below, which is in bold, you can see all he did was shout "what did you do to her" and he was arrested. Since when is raising one's voice grounds to be immediately handcuffed and arrested?

Of course when I say she "told me later," it’s because she wasn’t able to tell me at the time, because as soon as I demanded to know what the federal employee had done to make her cry, I was swarmed by Portland police officers. Instantly. Three of them, cinching my arms, locking me in handcuffs, and telling me I was under arrest.

These are the things he's admitting to! Do you think he wrote what happened in a way that cast the best light on him and the worst light on the screeners? I do.

"When I asked her what was the matter, she tried to quell her tears and sobbed, 'I’m sorry...it’s...they touched my breasts...and..." That’s all I heard. I marched up to the woman who’d been examining her and shouted, 'What did you do to her?'"

"Tell me, Eric, did Mr. Monahan 'do the right thing' by acting like an idiot and causing further upset and anguish for his wife, or could he have used a more grown-up approach and ended up on the winning side of it?"

I'm sorry, I don't see anyone "acting like an idiot" in Mr. Monahan's story...I see an upset, concerned husband and father to be.

What would you have done, tell your wife that she was over-reacting?

And you believe this? If 3 police officers were at the ready to pounce on him, they must've been drawn to him by the ruckus he was creating.

He never touched anyone though.

And how do you know that?

Yes. My daughter flew recently, by herself, one way ticket.

Yes, she was searched.

No, it was not a big deal.

Well put, SoT.

CG, did I miss the group hug!? Shoot. I had some popcorn and talked to my sister, though.

What do we do now?

I could find another story about abusive little Barney Fifes and we could argue about that one, too! ;-)

Have you flown in the last year??

There are literally dozens of police officers and security people at the entrance to every terminal...what a maroon!

Do you not see the issue here? The man acknowleges he was irritated but never committed a threatening act.

In his opinion. They disagreed about what he committed, and not having disdain for law enforcement, I tend to not convict them of harrassment because the guy says so, particularly when he is blaming them for his wife's c-section. He isn't rational.

And where he pitched a fit does matter. Searches are to be expected in airports, and he had one. So did his wife. I have boobs, and I don't think that means I am off the hook and should never be searched.

What will be your reaction to the TSA and Homeland Security then?

What good is it doing now? Homeland Security is just for show and to make you feel good.

If it had been the law before 9/11 how would it have stopped anything? How will it stop anything now?

That's why no no one can take you seriously. For heavens' sake, it's not OUR fault that you come across as a sexually confused tenth grader.

Sorry. I didn't realize you were assigned the job to speak for everyone here. Pretty important job.

Now, try to focus for a second. I know it's hard for you, but give it a shot.

Go back a post or two. I threw out a hypothetical for you to think through. Apparently you missed the post. Give it a whirl. Let's up the ante, though. Let's say it is 10 evil men in 10 theatres all coordinated to blow themselves up at the same time.

Come on. You can do it. I know you can. Answer the question: What would you think of the TSA and Homeland Security then?

If you can't break out of your "take it up the ass" mode long enough to think that through, then don't bother answering this post.

Here's another clue, Vanna:

If you have an enemy, you do not merely put up fences. You hunt the bastard down and you kill him before he kills you. That's war. That's defense. You obliterate the son of a bitch. You must be heartless about it.

But we can't do that in America, can we? It's unbecoming a country to truly defend itself. We'll hurt feelings and step on toes. While you are satisfied to accept the TSA and Homeland Security as the answer, I am not. They are decoration -- nothing more.

Do you recall the Iran hostage "crisis"? Do you recall the Iranians also kidnapped some Russians at the same time they took American hostages? Do you recall how long the Americans were held? Did you know the Russians were released almost immediately? Do you know why? Because the Russians nabbed a few clerics off the street and delivered them back to the fanatics dead with some of their anatomy rearranged. That's defense. That's war.

We do not have the stomach for it. No. That's not right. We are not permitted to have the stomach for it. Too many of your kind accept whatever swill the government hands you as "defense" and "war". You talk the big talk but you are really just a paper tiger. You run around spewing whatever the current "tough guy" group-think happens to be and believe you are on solid ground. You aren't.

We've been down this road before and it's gotten us nowhere. When the good men of our armed forces did what it took to win, there were a bunch of milk-in-the-gut cowards out there crying, "Oh, the horror!".

So, nighty-night, little camper. Sleep well knowing a plane won't be crashing into your house. Your government is watching out for you. Everything is under control. You're safe. Don't let it bother you a bit that maybe someone you know will get it in the mall or at a restaurant or movie theatre or maybe even your local church. You surely believe the government has got your back, afterall.

Hmmm...I guess it is OK to feel up women and search the crotches of 7 year-old girls too?

Or haven't you heard about that incident of harassment?
