Not so amazing. If the union cuts a deal with the employers to sell-out their present membership, so the employers can hire more workers than they have now at lower wages, the unions collect more dues.

I witnessed exactly this with a teamsters affiliated local over 20 years ago.

The employers get more cheap labor.

The unions collect more dues every month.

The union membership gets the royal shaft.
