A 36-year-old man has been charged with explosives offences after police allegedly found bomb components during a raid of his home unit in south-western Sydney.
Sheriffs department officers stumbled upon the bombs while trying to serve an eviction notice at the unit in Liverpool and immediately called police.
The bombs were 12-cm high containers that had been modified and contained a substance suspected to be ammonium nitrate and metal fragments.
Police arrested the man in nearby Terminus Street shortly after 4pm (AEDT) yesterday but investigators would not say why he had the 14 explosive devices.
Deputy Commissioner (Operations) Dave Madden said detectives, the Bomb Squad and forensic officers were immediately called to the scene and neighbours were evacuated.
But the bombs could not have been detonated in their current form, he said, and police were yet to establish what motivation the man had for having the bombs.
"The exact motive is unknown and we'll have to explore every possible reason why he may have had those explosive devices," Mr Madden told reporters at the scene.
"Whether they be religious, political, ideological - it's just too early to tell."
The arrested man has lived in Australia for 24 years, having arrived from South Africa.
The man was interrogated at Liverpool Police Station and remanded in custody to appear before Parramatta Bail Court today.
Probably containing a detailed description of Trent Lott's racist past.
For the Biblically literate it is slightly over one half a span or about a quarter cubit.
Count on it. The article does offer the guy's name or nationality. That's a dead giveaway right there. If he was a white guy named Joe Smith, his entire biography would be included.
Amazing how the fisrt article hid all the relevant details. Now it all starts to make sense.
In the first article Inspector Clousseau said "The exact motive is unknown and we'll have to explore every possible reason why he may have had those explosive devices." Guess we know now.
So you're saying that they were about .000596 furlongs?
