Perhaps it was and certainly that is how the media characterized it (I don't really know what was in Mr. Thurmond's mind), but I would like to know about how you formed that opinion at the time. It is clear to me that the principles cited in the pice warrant consideration AND demand clarification amid the current witch hunt.

I agree, and I feel a wave of optimism right now. I was never a Trent lott basher during his term as leader. Eventhough I felt he had some shortcomings, I felt he did a respectable job on most issues. As the new session approached, I looked forward to see how the agenda would proceed with Bush in the White House and a new mandate from the voters. Then came the Birthday Party Remarks. I am perfectly willing to believe that Lott had no intent to praise segregation, past or future. However, the sheer stupidity of the statements was stunning. Had no one ever told Lott that the press and the 'Rats would have a field day over any such slip-up? Lott had to go on the basis of lack of brains,if nothing else.
Today, Lott showed the gumption and quality of character that I hoped he had, but I had begun to wonder about.
Can we now hope that the savage attacks on Lott could backfire? Has there been created some degree of sympathy for the man? Will the redirected attacks on Lott's successor show the 'Rats as the despicable vultures of political opportunism that they are?
Now is the time to stand up and call the 'Rats out as self-serving, flesh-eating maggots of personal destruction. "FJB" Hillary, "G-D N" Bill, "KKK" Byrd, Woman-Killer Teddy, "Osama is wonderful" Murray --- cannot be OUR moral guardians. The Deomcrats -- the Slavery Party, the Jim Crow party, the Segregation party -- need to be put in their place.
Take a stand. Get off the defensive. Take the offensive. Time to give 'em Hell.

Republicans are cowards. They won't attack race pimps like Maxine Waters, and they won't jump on Patty Murrary for her remarks about bin Laden.
But they'll beat the hell out of Trent Lott.

Well your point is what? Since I was the one warning you people about the abortion connection to this attack. The fact it was not ending with Lott and that all of you needed to stand behind Lott instead of being gorly-boys.
