you only have to be a Permanent Resident (Green Card) in order to be hired as faculty.

Thanks for the post. You seem very knowledgable about this. I have one other question: how does a foreign student in the U.S. on a student visa get a green card? Do you know what the criteria are?

Interestingly, one of the leading Arab apologists and fomenters of terrorist rhetoric, "professor" Edward Said, still managed to vote in Florida while his citizenship was being processed. Despite that being a felony, he was not prosecuted or arrested for it.

By the way, I am fairly certain universities extend the "visiting faculty" to foreigners of all persuasions, the more rabidly leftist and anti-American the better. Sure, that's far from being tenured faculty, but they sure do have a loud voice.

You cannot work on a student visa (not for money, anyway, although I knew a German student years ago who would regularly take unpaid jobs in his prospective field, if they would look good on his resume, or net him some connections). The university, as his employer, would have to sponsor the Jordanian for his green card. I'm not sure, but I believed he'd be allowed to work while that is being processed.

I'm trying to work from memory, of how it happened for my German friend. But he got his green card the old-fashioned way--by marrying a good friend of mine. ;D

A foreign student in the US on a student visa has to have a job offer from a US firm in order to get a green card. Most employers (incl. Universities) are willing to sponsor foreign students to get a work permit (first step toawrds getting a green card) once they have made them a job offer. The criteria for getting a work permit are very strict, incl:
1) Proof that the position could not be filled even after a 6-12 month job search, incl. ads in prominent local newspapers and trade/industry journals.
2) Written statement from the employer justifying the hiring of a foreign national, including job description, why they are preferred over existing US candidates, and what qualifications set them apart.
3) Letters of reference from a professor at the university (for candidates with Masters degree and above).
4) Letter stating the candidates' qualifications are requisite for the job from someone in the industry other than the hiring manager.
5) Details of job offer showing that the salary is competitive per industry standards.
6) W2 and other tax forms to be submitted while the above process is going on.

After work permit has been issued, a petition is made for a green card if the person is still employed by the same employer. This requires an FBI fingerprint test, physical check-up, and sometimes, an interview, before a green card is granted. At that point, the person is considered a Permanent Resident.
