I am in shock this evening because just heard that a Jordanian doctoral candidate is being interviewed for a faculty position at the university where I am also a candidate and have been hoping for employment. She and her spouse have managed to have 2 kids while here, so the children are citizens, she and her husband are here on student visas. She is certainly qualified, but so are several other students finishing their dissertations. I am so ignorant of the hiring laws in these situations; can the university hire her when other qualified candidates who are citizens are applying for the position? I can't believe this.

PLK, in most universities, you only have to be a Permanent Resident (Green Card) in order to be hired as faculty. So citizens of foreign countries can be hired. American Citizenship is not required, but there is a list of countries whose citizens cannot be hired. At last check, these included Iraq, Libya, N. Korea, Cuba, Afghanistan, and Sudan. Jordan is not on that list.

I would suggest that you tell any interviewer, in your probable series of interviews, what you sense they want to hear. Schmooze to the best of your abilities. Go overboard without losing your credibility in the interview, so as to come out above your competition. Connect personally with them and be empathic.

Get in there.

We need conservatives at universities. And if you're going for a tenure track position, keep your mouth shut and play the party line until you achieve tenure.

"Can the university hire her?", you ask.

Would this be a usual university, as in "left-wing wacko"? Well, then, OF COURSE they can (and probably will) hire noncitizens, all the more so if they are enemies of the USA.

Where have you been?

Well, honey, get used to it! If you're white and a citizen of the good ole USA, you're automatically considered after everyone else has been.

I am so sorry you are shocked, did you ever stop to think about how many US citizens and legal residents have to compete against illegals for other positions such as in agriculture, domestic, landscaping, etc?

Just your turn in the barrel...don't forget the old law of supply and demand, if there were less workers for the same jobs, the wages would go up. We are paying for the deceptively low price of lettuce or housekeepers with higher taxes. Check out the H-1B, H-2B jobs and for that matter, why do we import baseball players, don't we have enough qualified ones here?

Believe it. Where I work there was a young man from Jamaica, who pretty much hates this country, and has had jobs that a lot of American citizens would love to have had and have now. He has no intention of becoming an American citizen or has he ever. This has been going on for at least 15 years, this guy has ben a master at working the system and scamming the company he works for. The powers that be,fear lawsuits to sum it up in one sentence. This type of injustice does need to be dealt with and it isnot going to bean easy road.
