"There have been a few here on FR who have tried to explain reality to you this past week. You refuse to see the obvious. I am not that patient, so this is the last I will post to you.

If Lott was gonna be gone, he'd be gone by now."

You and your "CUSTER CAUCUS" klan have a collective deficit, but no hard feelings. I'll try and survive without you dribbling on my court....

The charge against Lott was never specious, even given the most innocent reasonable interpretation of his homage to the Dixiecrats.

I started out feeling a lot more charitable for him at the outset, but his apologies have ranged from dismissive to grovelling without ever sincerely grasping what this is all about.

Now, Trent Lott has got to go before he damages the party further.

We agree on that. Mistakes are something we don't need.

There's too much at stake.

If we come out of this better than we went into it, I will be happy to say I was wrong.

I want to be wrong, but I can't get over the idea that we may have dropped the ball here... We can't afford to do that.

"The GOP SENATORS , except for Nickles ( who most of them HATE, BTW , and who desperately yearns to be SML ! ) are standing with Trent. That means, dear, that he won't leave. You'd better get your binoculars ... little piggies are flying ! ;^ )"

I know it's the obvious and easy assumption for you to believe that Lott and his loyal band of deflated spines won't rise up to this occasion when nearly *ALL* of the GOP and conservatives have gotten their collective heads out of their a**es, but I believe that he can not and will not survive, despite you and the "CUSTER CAUCUS'" best efforts at destroying the GOP via the self-centered air head Lott. I would LOVE to come back and say I told you so, but I have immense respect for you and will look forward to you approaching me with your heart felt thanks for all my common sense and political assessments.

So what? What happens to the other 50 Republican Senators? Are they somehow impotent? You don't think they'll intercede if he screws up again?

If Lott does stay as Leader, it'll be on some kind of probationary terms. Step out of line one more time and he's out. Lott spent whatever political capital that he had, and his credit limit is now 0.

I just can't see doomsday scenarios with Lott still in charge. The only thing that Lott can do is become a "suicide bomber" and choose to take such a horrendous action as to destroy everyone associated with him in one blaze of glory. That kind of narcissism I would have expected from Clinton, not Lott.

"As for Nickles, what a stupid move."

Nickles has more guts, moxy and political suasion in his little finger than the entire FReeper "CUSTER CAUCUS" combined...

Frankly, he's been a weak, appeasing leader

You won't get an argument from me about that nowadays.
But, he was a different man in the 80's. I reckon RR was more adept at twisting his arm than W.

Nevertheless, Lott doesn't deserve to be eaten by his own...especially when the preparing chef sports a donkey on his torque.

Peach of an column. I like Ann. Although her looks give her impetus to be, I think she'll become less self-conscious as she gets a bit older. ;-`

You have GOT to be kidding ! It's that, or somehow, somewhere, some strange person actually told you that you knew what you were talking about and you believed them. LOL

Common sense , COMMON, BLOODY SENSE , you imagine that what you've been typing is common sensical ? It ihasn't been, isn't and I'll do you the common courtesy, of not hitting you over the head with " I TOLD YA SOs" , when Lott isn't gone in a week, or a month. Besides, I shan't be on line; what with Christmas and my family coming in. LOL

"I mean, if you want to know where the hardest of the hard right comes down on an issue, FR's the place to conduct such a poll."

Considering that RATties can take in the poll too, if they're registered, those results come from the core of GOP and Conservative activists across America. THAT POLL tells me a LOTT. (had to)

Thanks for your note. Lott has to go from ML or the ship is sunk. Post haste. The first 6 months are the only 6 months that matter to get anything impacting done before the election cycle hits.

It's too late..

Those were arguments for a week ago. We can't have a rubber stamp for the rats leading the Senate.

He's crossed the Rubicon, that BET interview was just over the top.

It's about more than just his absent minded comment. He's become impossible to defend.

I do think the charge was specious, given that he didn't make his statements once or twice, but perhaps dozens of times. It was an inside joke between him and Thurmond that broke through the haze of senility and made him smile at his retirement events. It was not a Freudian slip that belies a deeper feeling. Sure, he may have those deeper feelings, only he knows for sure, but I don't think the statements were proof of that, just a gag routine between him and Thurmond that did in front of local supporters.

The specious part was that his critics know this, and being intellectually dishonest by calling him a racist and demanding that he resign.

Lott's an idiot...that's the only acceptable answer to all this, unless you foil up and put Trent on Daschle's payroll, even if only ideologically.

I had become convinced that Lott's actions during Clinton's impeachement had been a calculated political move.

If you impeach Bill, Al steps in and gets to run for election as an incumbent, on a leftist crusade to avenge Bill.

President Al for 2.5 terms.

I thought that maybe we should credit Trenton with a solid bit of political strategy.

Then there was the whole power sharing thing.

Now there's this.

This threatens to overturn, for a second consecutive time, the constitutionally elected GOP majority.

On top of that, he's on BET renouncing the entire GOP agenda, I heard someone say that the next thing you know, Trent is going to reveal his support for reparations.

Trent has done more for the Democratic Party in the past six years, than Daschle and Gephardt combined.

Maybe I need to wear foil more often.

Trent needs to step down and sit his term out, not commit seppuku. He was elected by the people of Mississippi to the post of Senator, not Senate Leader, and he should be reminded that the has a moral obligation to his constituency to complete this term.

Then he can retire by not running for re-election.

Having said all that, are we being terribly PC or what?

We spend half our time in FR hammering on politicians because they are meely-mouthed, and will not stand by their principles.

Trent has been doing that for the past 54 years, he makes mention of it at a birthday party, and we're going to run him out of town on a rail.

"I think all that's left to do is see how it plays out and just bite the bullet if it goes poorly for us."

Lott can do the right thing, for once, and atone for this mess, turning his booger into a American/GOP/conservativerose. Email Trent and ask him to do the right thing. Thousands from MS have today alone.

Would you agree?: The central question of whether or not Trent Lott should be Senate Majority Leader for the 108th Congress is not about who is pressuring whom, any more than it is about race.

This is about Mr. Lott's overall lack of competence for that leadership role, something which he has demonstrated in earlier years and has continued to, since the night of December 6th.

Also, the question seems to increasingly be whether or not Republican politicians and Senators understand themselves as public servants, or entitled members of self-serving clubs. The USA does not have a noble class, neither a House of Lords.

Senate Republican Caucus: Do what serves the People.

The charge is that Lott's comments were nostalgic for the Dixiecrats. Who says stuff like that that never felt it or meant it?

And who, with any political savvy, runs up and grabs ahold of stupidity like that?

The first 6 months are the only 6 months that matter to get anything impacting done before the election cycle hits.

I heard this too, but it can work both ways.

Republicans won the mid-term election in part because the Democrats showed themselves to be obstructionists, cheats, and liars, all within the last 30 days of the election. If Bush campaigns on a platform of trying to do the job the voters sent him to do, but the Democrats keep trying to undermine him and steal the voter's intent from them, they'd probably support him regardless.

I agree that in the first six months, he would have to build the planks of that platform and have them solidly nailed into place. That's why it is important that he resolve the question of Iraq, not necessarily have it over with, just the open question of whether we attack or not. It would also be good to have a few Judiciary nominations behind him, and more movement on tax reduction.
