Opposition Research Starts on Nickles

Early this week, I told those of you who want Trent Lott gone that dumping him will not end the smearing. I said, "Even now, Democratic Party operation research is giving a Clymer exam to the records of all potential Lott replacements." Sure enough, Jim Abrams of the Associated Press has run the first hit piece on Senator Don Nickles (R-OK), who came out against Lott on one of the Sunday shows.

Headline: "Nickles' Voting Record on Civil Rights Mirrors Lott's." The subtext here is that Don Nickles embraces segregation, "too" because that's what they say about Lott. This is going to keep happening to Republicans until we stop being worried about whether or not we're all thought of as racists. It's going to keep happening until we start tackling this with the mountain of historical facts about the Republican Party's history on civil rights.

I guarantee you they're working on similar stories about Senators McConnell, Frist, Domenici and anyone else who might replace Lott. Without mentioning the Democrats who also opposed it, Abrams dutifully transcribes the DNC talking point that Nickles opposed making Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday a federal holiday. He does write that "Nickles unsuccessfully pushed alternatives to a paid holiday," but follows it up quickly with the fact that he backed a Jesse Helms amendment to preserved tax exempt status for private schools, such as Bob Jones University.

You must mention Bob Jones; it's obligatory if AP wants to keep getting the DNC faxes and not have to actually do their own research instead. There's a whole bunch of tax exempt colleges out there, but you have to name this one. Everywhere in this article it's "Lott and Nickles." It's like reading an article about Sonny & Cher. AP also reports that "the senators" again, they are one-and-the-same, "differed with the NAACP" on Head Start, education programs, the confirmation of John Ashcroft and global AIDS funding.

So they're all bigots, because they dared disagree with the NAACP and supported Ashcroft. They're already moving on from Lott to Nickles, as proved by the quote AP printed from Hillary Shelton, director of the NAACP's Washington office: "We're concerned..." Oh, she's quoting Daschle! "We're concerned that Nickles has voted just as poorly or even more poorly than Trent Lott." [Italics added] Do you see this? Nickles is even worse, now! I hate to say See, I Told You So, but this is all happening. We have to take this garbage on. There's no other way to stop it.

Lott is a jerk, but we can't afford to back down to blackmail and extortion.

As I've said before, Democrats, Arabs, and yellow dogs are all the same. If you back down, they'll jump on you.

Or it could be that somebody will finally stand up and say

"Hey, Trent, you're not going to dump THIS garbage on us."

Nobody's going to take Trent Lott's job who doesn't pass muster with Lincoln Chaffee

How does Majority Leader Chaffee sound to you? Nice ring to it and he wouldn't jump. That'll show those democrats........dripping sarcasm.

Yes, and about time too. But some have wanted to stick their head in the sand and pretend that there was no controversy, and then feabily offer up lame explanations. That ain't leadership; that's Trent Lott.

>>>We should have hit the beast with a 2X4 the day this Lott business emerged.

Instead "we" turned tail and ran for the hills.

Shameful.

Trent Lott made a stupid, ill-conceived remark, and he apologized for it.

Wimpy-*ssed "conservatives" left him hung out to dry.

We've proved that if Lott himself was a "wimp," he was just playing true to type, since apparently that's what you're supposed to be if you're a Republican.

That's what I've learned here on FR this past week.

"Hey, Trent, you're not going to dump THIS garbage on us."

Sorry but in large measure it is on "us". At least admit that losing the senate or hogtying the next ML is worth the price of getting rid of Lott. I hope freepers are at least honest enough to accept the consequences.

The bar for "racism" is now so low, no one can get under it. We are now in thought crime territory.

That's what I've been thinking. Half the people calling for Lott's head have said, "No one really believes he's a racist, that's not the point...." And they're right. The REAL point is, not-a-racist is no longer ENOUGH. Now, if you're white and a conservative, you have to prove that race is your TOP PRIORITY.

The libs pushed me off of the fence on this the issue of whether Lott stays or goes. I say he should stay. Not only to PO the libs but also he's now our "satellite dish" for all punditt criticism of our party.

Was there "controversy" when Carville uttered his infamous "drag a hundred dollar bill through a trailer park" comment?

Was there "controversy" when Al Sharpton said of the Jewish-owned business on 125th Street:

You’ll be hearin’ more about this. Reverend Sharpton is on it. We had made contact with these crackers, and we ain’t expecting much out of ’em, and we gonna let ’em know they really haven’t seen how we feel about anything yet, but we gonna show ’em.
Which led to the eventual arson and murder of several of the store's employees?

Was there "controversy" when "Reverend" Jesse Jackson referred to New York City as "Hymietown"?

Was there "controversy" when Robert Byrd made his not-so-famous (because not-so-bandied-about) comments regarding "white niggers"?

Well, my stars, no there was not!

So maybe we can forgive Mr. Lott for being so naive and gullible as to think that his far more innocent remarks--stupid, yes; ill-conceived, yes; but with not one iota of bad will contained therein--weren't "controversial."

I admit I've been amazed at the controversy. You'd think I'd understand the double-standard by now, but it seems to catch me up every time.

I know better now, though, since so many idio--er--thoughtful FReepers have set me straight on the point.

Great Article - everyone should read it!!

Here's an excerpt/

For the last twelve years, we at the Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny have been fighting against the demoralization of blacks in this country by the likes of Jesse Jackson, Maxine Waters, Louis Farrakhan, Al Sharpton, the Black Caucus, the liberal elite Democratic Party, and others. But we must realize that this is not the only form of demoralization at work. While demoralizing blacks, these racist demagogues have also succeeded in demoralizing whites.

One word—“racist”—has been elevated to a sacred status, to the point now where even the threat of being labeled “racist” causes whites to cower to the wishes of blacks. The fact is that the civil rights “leaders” and elite liberal Democrats are at fault for the poor condition of the black community, not white racism. But, having largely given in to their lies, the white culture is suffering not only because blacks are free to be immoral without complaint, but also because many whites now lack character as a result of giving in to this fear.

The rest is great!

Bingo! (But, worth noting: Only Democrats/Libs hold the ever-lower bar; only Republicans/Conservatives have to do the Limbo underneath.)

You are EXACTLY right.

He'd be right if instead of "we" wielding the two by four he'd said "Lott" had handled it right off the bat. Too bad he didn't. And even you would have to admit he has made a total mess of it, culminating in that disastrous appearance last night.

I don't fear charges being leveled against honorable men that are capable of handling it. Lott has demonstrated he is not capable, and I regret to say,not honorable.

Sure. And when does it end, Howlin? At what point are you going to realize that the Democrats don't see themselves as doing you a favor? That they're going after whoever it is that's next in line? That they won't rest until Lott has resigned his Senate seat, and a Democrat, like Mike Espy, is installed in his place? And that they will make sure that anyone who dares to campaign against Espy in a special election is destroyed with the same poison darts?

And that they're going to keep on and keep on until every Republican is automatically considered "racist," until such Republicans as Chaffee, Snow and Specter determine they have to switch parties so they won't be blacklisted as well?

Sorry, but the depth of STUPIDITY which so many FReepers have shown me on this issue has gotten me very down.

You people are SO foolish.

Lott is a jerk, but we can't afford to back down to blackmail and extortion.

Which blackmail and extortion do you mean? The Democrat's blackmail and extortion or Trent Lott's blackmail and extortion?

Digging In: Lott threatens to give the Senate back to Dems if forced to step aside.

The Democrats are now trying to equate opposition to their political agenda as "anti-civil rights".

Fine. Let them try and play that game. Hopefully, a new Senate Majority Leader will take the opportunity to adequately and forcefully explain our Conservative philosophy to the American public instead of exposing his belly like a submissive puppy as Lott did on BET.

We fight them the best way we can. I don't happen to think that keeping an ADMITTED racist as the leader of this party helps matters.

And what exactly is YOUR plan? Do WE go down with Lott? Would that satisfy you? Would you be happy if he totally destroyed what the rest of us worked so hard for for two years in 30 SECONDS OF A SPEECH?

Have you ever tried to apologize for something you did not do? As for "honorable" please don't use that word in conjunction with anyone in this sorry episode.
