Opposition Research Starts on Nickles

Early this week, I told those of you who want Trent Lott gone that dumping him will not end the smearing. I said, "Even now, Democratic Party operation research is giving a Clymer exam to the records of all potential Lott replacements." Sure enough, Jim Abrams of the Associated Press has run the first hit piece on Senator Don Nickles (R-OK), who came out against Lott on one of the Sunday shows.

Headline: "Nickles' Voting Record on Civil Rights Mirrors Lott's." The subtext here is that Don Nickles embraces segregation, "too" because that's what they say about Lott. This is going to keep happening to Republicans until we stop being worried about whether or not we're all thought of as racists. It's going to keep happening until we start tackling this with the mountain of historical facts about the Republican Party's history on civil rights.

I guarantee you they're working on similar stories about Senators McConnell, Frist, Domenici and anyone else who might replace Lott. Without mentioning the Democrats who also opposed it, Abrams dutifully transcribes the DNC talking point that Nickles opposed making Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday a federal holiday. He does write that "Nickles unsuccessfully pushed alternatives to a paid holiday," but follows it up quickly with the fact that he backed a Jesse Helms amendment to preserved tax exempt status for private schools, such as Bob Jones University.

You must mention Bob Jones; it's obligatory if AP wants to keep getting the DNC faxes and not have to actually do their own research instead. There's a whole bunch of tax exempt colleges out there, but you have to name this one. Everywhere in this article it's "Lott and Nickles." It's like reading an article about Sonny & Cher. AP also reports that "the senators" again, they are one-and-the-same, "differed with the NAACP" on Head Start, education programs, the confirmation of John Ashcroft and global AIDS funding.

So they're all bigots, because they dared disagree with the NAACP and supported Ashcroft. They're already moving on from Lott to Nickles, as proved by the quote AP printed from Hillary Shelton, director of the NAACP's Washington office: "We're concerned..." Oh, she's quoting Daschle! "We're concerned that Nickles has voted just as poorly or even more poorly than Trent Lott." [Italics added] Do you see this? Nickles is even worse, now! I hate to say See, I Told You So, but this is all happening. We have to take this garbage on. There's no other way to stop it.

Then maybe the way to keep him from doing that is to stop the derision, ridicule and rage and let him retire to the backbench with some semblance of dignity left. Lott will be ousted as ML. is that not enough to let go of the juggler for now?

Absolutely. I will defend him if he will do that. IMO, he will be on the road to political recovery if he does that.

But he might want to shut up about supporting AA and other such nonsense if he doesn't want to further damage himself. ;-)

I certainly can't defend that.

You shouldn't count on his goodwill, right now.

And he should count on ours?

Lott's best course is step aside as ML and return to being the Senator from Mississippi. He's been in GOP politics for over 30 years. If he turns the Senate over to the Democrats, he burns bridges even in retirement. More, I think, than he'd be willing to lose.

There you go again. You know that story was false. It was a comment from Mitch McConnell in the conference call and Lott had nothing to do with it.But you still lie about it.

You are all over the place, acting contrite then making false allegations, then back to wishing him well, blah blah....you are a hypocrite.

Bull.

It was never false.

It was being wielded all the way through, and if you think it wasn't, you are being naive.

McConnell has promised a bitter harvest if the Dems even think about it. Senator Sheets would be right there with Lott.

Yeah sure. Look, either face up to the very real potential consequences of this bone-headed move and say you are willing to accept either a completely emasculated senate or the loss of it all together or be satisfied with Lott being humiliated and drop it. It is time for the freeper/GOP Borking of Lott to call it a day. It was successful and now let’s go back to pretending to fight liberal control of the government.

Hell, I can even stand John McCain, most of the time, now that he's shut up. Judas Jeffords' will never live down his betrayal, OTOH. So, the question for Lott is, is he going to be another McCain, or another Jeffords? I wish he would hurry up and make up his mind because, right now, the omens aren't promising.

Yours? Who are you to him? Just what say do you have over him right now? He has to clear his decisions with you?
lol

Or are you going to hound him if he didn't follow your script? And threaten him because he didn't indulge your fantasy?

Lott Borked himself. No FReeper made it happen. But I do agree that it is time to put it to bed.

So said Pontius Pilate. And no I am not comparing Lott to Christ just you to his judge.

You're being very emotive. I was always proud of how you stood up to the Bush bashers.

Now we're all just standing in a circle pissing on each others boots.

1) Lott screwed up.

2) Our Pubbie wolves mostly using racial indignation to cover their zeal to bag Lott at this opportunity screwed up.

3) Our truly beloved POTUS screwed up by publicly flaming Lott

4) Now Lott is prostrate and groveling at the PC altar which is unsettling to say the least.

5) Meanwhile our shrill knitting crowd is still calling for more humiliation.

6) Many many Pubbies including one I admire most ...Bill Bennett... are acting like frigging Dems with all this racial hypersensitivity.

7) Many of the most shrill on this forum are not even on our team....they are your former adversaries....don't you remember them? Do you think myself, JH2, nopardons, rintense, and even JR are fools as well.

8) Holding our party together and not being whipped into submission by the PC gestapo is paramount.....unfortunately at this juncture barring a strong leader's whip I don't see that happening. Everyone who has touched this has screwed it up. Why?....because they are either personally ambitious or terrified of being tarred by the everpresent race smear.

9) If you think that outside of the Islamist threat that white racism is the greatest threat to our freedom or that it even exists to any significant degree then my dear....you are simply wrong. Political correctness and the stifling of an honest debate is an exponentially greater threat. How many true white racists are there anyhow by your guess?....a few thousand maybe. Hell Louis Farakhan gets 20 times that at just one rally. This is a phantom issue used by our foes to make us squirm and it works. It's time to stop it and fight the real racists and dividers and disenfranchisers. You and your pals are as much to blame for this mess as is Lott. Had more Pubbies shown spine from the getgo it would never have gone so far like this. Now...it may be unrepairable. Is conservatism not about social change to you?

What a damn mess. Not a damn thing to dance over here. I'm sick of looking around at all this Bush bashers and libertinians on this forum having such a gleeful time at our expense. I know you and some of the others are fine folk but in your mad rush to prove how "tolerant" you are you've walked right into our enemies trap. Lott lit his own ass on fire stupidly and you guys threw gasoline on it.

One nod to you: After a few days of watching Lott, I'm not sure he's defendable unless he nuts up himself. We can't do it for him. Lott screws up in a questionable gaffe and the whole damn party rushes left. It's a wonder the boat didn't capsize....hell...it may have. For me...it's not about Lott...hardly...I'm no different than any other FReeper when it comes to him. It's about making a stand even if it's not one we'd choose on purpose. We're probably going to cave one way or another and we will pay for it a long time regardless and not just because Lott goofed but because so many of us caved right away to begin with. Shame...we may not deserve to rule.

Yes I was thinking of expelled.

So, you're saying that no Senator has remained in the Senate after expulsion?

Lott, for his part, distanced himself from the threat—even as aides still were making it on his behalf. “My term runs through 2006,” he told NEWSWEEK. “I intend to serve it, whatever happens.”

Posted just a little earlier in this thread...post #234...there is even a link there.

So said Pontius Pilate. And no I am not comparing Lott to Christ just you to his judge.

For that to be true, I would have to have more earthly political power than the Majority Leader of the United States Senate.

Hate to break it to you, but I'm just one guy typing on a keyboard in South Dakota.
