The Weimar Republic instituted gun registration, quite possibly with the most noble and benign intentions. But when the Nazis rose to power, they inherited the lists and started disarming political opponents and Jews, the rest is history. It doesn't matter how benign the intentions of the Weimar Republic might have been, either. And for that matter, no gun grabber today is even bothering to attempt to make any sort of case that could preclude a future government from using registration lists for confiscation, no matter how "benign" the intentions of the present regime.
