Their are 80-90,000 private sector people on the unemployment rolls here in Silicon Valley. Many busineses and jobs were taxed out of exisitence to support California's bloated bureaucracy.

Welcome to reality. Wish we could cut some of our sacred government payrolls here...

My friend, welcome to the economy. Please get in line for your 36-49 weeks of unemployment checks courtesy of the federal government as that is the only obvious solution to your job loss. (sarcasm OFF)

You just signed up, and you think a bunch of Freepers will help you save your taxpayer funded "job"? I don't think so.

The biggest problem these former state workers will have is that no one in his right mind would hire a government worker for a private sector job. Most bureaucrats are just not employable.

With that proviso aside, they can just join the queue and search for a job like the other millions of Americans have had to do in the past few years.

State Budget Crisis
Protect State Employees

Governor John Rowland, in a meeting November 13 with representatives from the State Employees Bargaining Agent Coalition (SEBAC), asked for the equivalent of $22,000 in give backs from each union state employee.

His proposed solution does not solve the state's budget problems, but does demand $89 million in give backs this year, $450 million dollars in annual give backs next fiscal year and an additional $450 million dollars in give backs the following fiscal year. That's over $22,000 dollars for each union state employee between now and June 30, 2005.

State employee leaders have joined human service activists, municipal leaders, and many others in calling on the Governor to address Connecticut's structural revenue shortfalls by asking multimillionaires and Connecticut's largest corporations to pay their fair share.

Contact your state representative and state senator today and ask them to pass solutions that don't balance the budget on the backs of state employees.

Yeah, it's a real tragedy that these state workers are losing their jobs. But is it? Who exactly is getting laid off? How many employees does the state have? How many did it have five years ago? How would the state pay for these people? Do they really do anything that the government should be doing?

Sure, there'll be some people that probably don't deserve a pink slip: but that's the way it is anywhere. So many governments just added on layers of government, and now they're screwed. And many of them can't raise taxes: more people will just leave the state. Colorado's Bill Owens didn't do all the crazy spending of the 1990s, and that state is well off now.

Hmmm... let me get this straight... you want Freepers to help express disatisfaction with the concept of cutting the size of government?

Just one question:

What color is the sky in your world????

It will all work out, you can find a job in the service industry, if an illegal hasn't filled the position that is, don't bother to check manufacturing, or construction it isn't there. We are busy making it our business to lift third world countries into the 21 century, don't cha know.

Welcome to the way everyone else is living, leaving one low wage job, to go work 4 to 8 hours at another low wage job attempting to stay in the middle class. Say bye bye to the family, everyone is at work. If it is good enough for my family....

Attorney General Richard Blumenthal wants a special legislative session to repeal a law that allows charities to hold casino-style Las Vegas Night fundraisers. The law also could allow a third American Indian-run casino in Connecticut.(October 2, 2002)

The Lay off's are permanent meaning none of the 2800 will be called back to work, and still the Governor has promised more lay offs after the first of the year...

If the government feels pain from the lay-offs, people will be called back. Basically, ask yourself, can the state still go on if you are laid off? If the answer is "yes", then start to worry. If the answer is, "no", then you should be OK, because the last thing your Governor wants is voter outrage over cutting critical services.

I say this as someone who was laid off as a state worker. Of course I voted for the people who cut the taxes that led to my lay-off and thought it was the right thing for them to do. Truth be told, they got along quite well without me.

In Illinos, the Gov. offered incentives for long-term employees to retire.
10,000 took 'em up on it. 3500 more than expected.
Half of the positions will be re-filled with entry level salaries, saving the state 165 million by 7/01/03.

Has your Gov. offered anything like this ? If not, suggest it.

Cry me a river. Why not just go work at a casino, you know, with your pre-european American buddies. After all, they are just so wonderful.

Time to get a real job and stop sucking my life blood.

Connecticut, the death by a 1000 taxes state.
