PRESS RELEASE New Jersey Right to Life 49 Alden St Cranford, NJ 07016

December 16, 2002 For Immediate Release, December 16, 2002

Contact: Marie Tasy Director of Public & Legislative Affairs (732) 846-2000

The NJ Senate Embraces Lethal Cloning and Experimentation on Human Beings

Legislation would authorize partial birth abortions up to the day of delivery and establish human embryo and fetal farms in NJ.

Today, 25 NJ Senators shamefully embraced gruesome and destructive research in which human beings will be experimented on for their desired cells and/or organs. In addition to allowing embryonic human beings left over from infertility clinics to be dissected and killed, S1909 allows the artificial manufacture of cloned human beings to be implanted into a uterus at the embryonic stage and harvested for research and killed at any time from the embryonic period through the ninth month of gestation. Commenting on the legislation, Marie Tasy, Director of Public & Legislative Affairs for New Jersey Right to Life, said, “this is truly mad science.”

“The sponsors, with the help of biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, have politicized this issue and attempted to persuade public opinion with distortions and false promises of curing ‘Superman’ and other maladies through this misguided legislation,” said Tasy. “The truth of the matter,” said Tasy, “is that embryonic stem cells have not helped a single human being, and in fact, have actually led to mutation, tumor formation and tissue rejection in humans.”

“In their quest for national fame and notoriety, NJ lawmakers have acted irresponsibly to create a foul climate where ghoulish human experimentation and organ harvesting will be performed and human embryo and fetal farms will flourish throughout our state,” said Tasy. “Because the prohibited conduct of cloning a human being draws the line only at the newborn stage, abortions including partial birth abortions up to the day of delivery would be authorized under this legislation,” noted Tasy.

“Under this bill, human lives will be treated as a commodity, creating classes of lesser humans to be sacrificed for the good of humanity,” said Tasy. “How ironic that this same body of government which legislated protection for animals and living invertebrate animal organisms is now seeking to make it the public policy of NJ to allow lethal experimentation on living human beings,” said Tasy. (Reference: S240 passed Sept. 12, 2002.)

Tasy said NJRTL would score each Senator’s vote and make this information available to NJ registered voters in each of the 40 legislative districts at election time.

Research Shows Fetal Cells From Abortions Don't Help Parkinson's

Washington, DC -- A second study of transplanted fetal cells obtained from abortions has failed to show a therapeutic benefit in Parkinson's disease patients and produced serious side effects in some patients, the Wall Street Journal reports. The findings are "a blow" to researchers who had thought that transplants of brain tissue from aborted babies could stop the effects of the disease.

For the study, which involved 34 participants, Mount Sinai School of Medicine and University of South Florida researchers infused brain tissue from up to eight aborted babies, ranging from six to nine weeks old, into 23 patients with Parkinson's disease.

Brain scans of the participants indicated that the transplanted cells functioned "normally," but researchers were unable to "find any measurable improvement on tests of motor and other skills," according to the report.

In addition, the "most severe setback" was side effects that included uncontrolled limb movement in 13 patients. Three patients experienced such severe side effects that they required additional surgeries to control them.

The study -- the second of two federally funded studies to examine if embryonic stem cells can repair brain tissue in Parkinson's patients -- could lead to a "winding down" for future fetal-cell transplants. Anthony Lang, a Parkinson's expert at Toronto Western Hospital in Canada, said, "This is a surprising result that forces reconsideration of transplantation without a great deal more research."

The study could also have implications for embryonic stem cell research, which has recently "upstaged both politically and scientifically" research using fetal cells from abortions. Some researchers consider stem cells "more versatile" than fetal cells.

President Bush in August 2001 prohibited federal funding for any new embryonic stem cell research. Research using fetal cells from abortions, however, is covered by a separate rule established in 1993 under former President Clinton.

Fetal Cell Study a Bust
By David Brody, Washington, D.C., correspondent

SUMMARY: A federally funded medical study shows
conclusively that fetal cells taken from abortions do not
benefit Parkinson's patients. As a matter of fact, many of
them experienced serious side effects.

For years, liberal scientists had thought taking cells from
aborted fetuses would be a cure-all for adults that have
debilitating diseases. But a study from the University of
Florida shows that's not the case at all. Researchers
infused brain tissue from up to eight aborted babies into
Parkinson's patients. Not only did the treatments not
help the patients, but 13 of them suffered uncontrollable
limb movement. Three of them needed additional
surgery to fix the problem.

Richard Doerflinger, a spokesman for the National
Conference of Catholic Bishops, says it's a case of "I
told you so."

"This is what the pro-life movement was saying 10 years
ago -- that this was not so promising, that is was morally
problematic," Doerflinger said. "It looks, once again, as
though we were right. I don't imagine anyone's going to
thank us for that."

Two years ago, another federally funded study showed
the same type of results. So, the question really is: Why
doesn't this type of research end once and for all? Tom
Lothamer, executive director of Baptists for Life, has a
theory.

"It is satanic to me. That's really the bottom line,"
Lothamer said. "It doesn't make sense why they
continue to have to keep trying to go down this road
when ... they're finding negative results."

Some might hope that these negative results using
aborted fetal tissue might also give researchers pause
before plunging further into the area of stem cells
derived from human embryos. However, Doerflinger
doubts that will happen and, in fact, he envisions a far
worse scenario.

"The reaction that some people are having to this latest
study is that, 'Oh, the fetal tissue doesn't work so we
must renew our efforts to go even further down the
ethical sink by going more and more into embryonic
stem cell research,' " he said.

In addition to being unethical, Doerflinger noted such
research would be scientifically irresponsible because, in
the past, when cells from an embryo were placed into
animals, the animals got tumors.

President Bush Appoints 5 PRO ABORTION Judges to the NJ Federal Judiciary!!

So much for the GOP pro-life party Platform plank, which states:

The Supreme Court’s recent decision, prohibiting states from banning partial-birth abortions — a procedure denounced by a committee of the American Medical Association and rightly branded as four-fifths infanticide — shocks the conscience of the nation. As a country, we must keep our pledge to the first guarantee of the Declaration of Independence. That is why we say the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed. We support a human life amendment to the Constitution and we endorse legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment’s protections apply to unborn children. Our purpose is to have legislative and judicial protection of that right against those who perform abortions. We oppose using public revenues for abortion and will not fund organizations which advocate it. We support the appointment of judges who respect traditional family values and the sanctity of innocent human life.

Actions speak louder than words or party planks.

“Under this bill, human lives will be treated as a commodity, creating classes of lesser humans to be sacrificed for the good of humanity ...” Smaller most vulnerable humans sacrificed by the older, stronger humans for the benefit of older, stronger humans. Cannibalism under the guise of enlightened social and medical policy. This is the nature terminus for the democrats' defense of the indefensible. May God have mercy on US.

That a state would be so bold in championing this exploitative frankenscience is a frightening indictment of our nation. What lies and deceit spawned the Roe decision have now led down the raod of which some warned back in 1973: '... dehumanize the most vulnerable in order to legitimize slaughtering them for convenience sake and it will not be long until they are slaughtered for medical advancement sake, heralding the horrific loss of OUR humanity.' I will repeat for the umpteenth time, "Where in the name of humanity are the animal studies to prove that this evil exploitation of individual human beings will even work, before seeking to institute such bloody exploitation of human beings?" That there has not been extensive work done with a range of higher mammals, before experimenting with individual human lives, is a glaring indictment of the science and scientists involved. Where greed directs, evil flows under the door to drown the willing servants.

There is none, look at posts 2 and 7. There are a lot of lies being perpetrated by Satan, remember he IS the master of deception. The Republicans are equally to blame, many (including staunchly pro life legislators) abstained and didn't take a stance.

I believe that something exactly like that will happen, dear Polycarp. God will stop our nation and rip away our land, resources, prestige, and power.

President Bush needs to wake up very quickly or he will suffer the same fate as Fletcher in Louisiana. I will not vote for Bush unless he very quickly turns around and starts moving quickly and vigorously to save the pre-born and thereby bankrupt Planned Parenthood and their chain of a abortuaries.

Well, Time will tell, and I am not too optimistic since this same Senate voted down, not once but twice, the parental notification amendment after which, there was no outrage by the 5 bishops in NJ. They should have, at least, printed the names of the Senators voting NO in their newspapers. Here is a link in today's news.

I am wondering why Cardinale (a staunch pro-life conservative) did not vote NO and only abstained. John Matheussen (R-4) just ran in the US Senate primary, against Forrester and Allen, last June as a PRO-LIFE CATHOLIC, I wonder what happened in 6 months?

Bill moves N.J. closer to being a leader in stem cell research
Tuesday, December 17, 2002

BY ROBERT SCHWANEBERG
Star-Ledger Staff

The Senate yesterday passed a bill that would make New Jersey the second state to officially encourage medical research using embryonic stem cells despite President Bush's policy of sharply restricting it.

Supporters said research using embryonic stem cells could produce cures for a variety of ailments including Parkinson's disease, spinal cord injuries, cancer and Alzheimer's disease.

Critics raised a variety of ethical and moral objections. Some said it destroys human life in its earliest form, while others objected to the bill's official endorsement of a form of human cloning for purposes of medical research. The bill would outlaw human cloning for purposes of reproduction.

"It is my hope that in 10 years the State of New Jersey will be the state where we have found a cure where an Alzheimer's patient can once again remember his daughter's name," Senate co-President Richard Codey (D-Essex), the bill's sponsor, told his colleagues.

Five Republicans joined all 20 Democrats in voting for the bill. It now goes to the Democrat-controlled Assembly, where it received a warm reception yesterday from Assembly Speaker Albio Sires (D-Hudson).

"I'm in favor of that 100 percent -- anything that can cure Alzheimer's," Sires said, adding that he would need to study the bill's details.

No senators voted against the bill, but 15 Republicans refused to support it by abstaining.

Sen. Diane Allen (R-Burlington) said more Republicans would have supported it if it did not officially endorse a controversial technique that inserts adult DNA into the nucleus of an unfertilized egg and is commonly known as therapeutic cloning. Allen unsuccessfully tried to have it dropped from the bill.

Scientists at Stanford University in California, the first state to endorse embryonic stem cell experimentation, announced last week they would use therapeutic cloning to make stem cells for medical research. Supporters of such experimentation, notably actor Christopher Reeve, contend it holds great promise for developing therapies and replacement organs that minimize the chance of rejection because they are based on the patient's own DNA.

In theory, an embryo created through somatic cell nuclear transfer could be implanted into a woman and grow into a genetic replica of the DNA donor. Codey's bill would outlaw that and violators would face prison terms of up to 20 years.

But Marie Tasy, director of public and legislative affairs for New Jersey Right to Life, said that part of the bill needs to be tougher. As written, she said, it "would allow a cloned human embryo to be implanted and grown and harvested for its organs up until the day of delivery."

Sen. Gerald Cardinale (R-Bergen) said the legislation "has a great objective" but pursues it through unethical means.

"There are some people who think the embryo is a person, and for them killing that embryo (to harvest its stem cells), for whatever good purpose, is just not something we have a right to do," Cardinale said.

In order to discourage the destruction of any more embryos, President Bush limited federal funding to research on stem cell lines already created before August 2001. Codey's bill goes against that policy by encouraging couples who undergo in vitro fertilization procedures and end up with unused embryos to donate them for research.
