Lott said what he said the other night at Thurmond's party because he believes it. He may be ashamed to admit it, but he does. He said the same thing in 1980 and has probably said it many other times as well (undocumented in public and in private). This wasn't Lott getting caught up in the moment of an old man's party and just saying something stupid-- which the whole notion is absurd (saying you're going to put food on your family is a gaffe, saying the country would have been better off electing a segregationist isn't).
