How is it that you all are arguing he's NOT a racist but he's saying WE are?

Because if he is a "racist" then every person in the south is a racist. I don't agree with either one but that does not change the fact that by the standard set for Lott it applies to all of us.

It shouldn't matter what percent is on his staff if they were hired for their ability to do the job.

The point was that Lott was trying to use his one hire of a black to work in his mail room as proof that he was in favor of affirmatative action. Lott is a joke.

Yep, it was very predictable. No surprises at all.

"President Bush had to make his statement and I am sure he is furious at the position he AND our party have been placed in by one person and one person alone. Trent Lott."

Bingo. As only the Vacant, self-centered, traitor Lott could do.

You are darned right I am concerned about the likes of James Carville. Who do you think helped put the *astard in the White House for eight long years. He is planning on putting another one there. Don't believe me? Just wait and see.

Juleanne Malveaux

That's not the only time she has said things like that. Double standard again.

What would be your solution to this problem? I don't have a really good answer, but I am confident that if we look for solutions instead of throwing grenades at each other we can figure something out which could be passed on to the White House and the Senate.

I will say upfront that I have missed the interview, but read comments posted here. It seems to me that Lott has not only admitted being a racist (comments about learning and growing) but he has implied that we are ALL racists. This is absolutely INTOLERABLE.

We need someone GOOD to be out there tomorrow at 9am calling a press conference and denouncing Lott in the most extreme terms for selling us out. Stand in front of the cameras and tell the whole world what the GOP stands for.

We stand for equality for everyone. THAT'S why we support school vouchers. Affirmative action is no more than telling black people, "You can't do it on your own." SS reform, tort reform, and every other damn GOP idea applies to everyone as equally as can be.

We need to say it, we need to explain it, and we need to fight for it with our dying breath. THAT is what Trent Lott failed to do.

As soon as he was questioned he ran away and the blood was in the water. If his collegues in the Senate could have been assured that Lott would stand and fight and be fierce then they may have gone out on a limb and fought for him too. But, personally, I wouldn't have risked it either.

"Maybe we have been watching different fights but I THOUGHT this was about Trent Lott being a racist."

Whether he truly is or is not; it's the fact that he was stupid enough, as leader, to make most people wonder.

The standard of not saying inappropriate things in public?

BTW, that's not a fair thing to say; I'm about his age and I've NEVER hung out with the crowd he has hung out with.

Nor did my mother ever threatend to shoot the editor of the newspaper because he was posting articles in support of integration. And that wasn't a long time ago: that was in 1989.

I'm not a racist, nor or most of my friends. If you're going to use that line of defense, don't be surprised when it ends up with more conservatives mad at Lott then there are blacks mad at him.

"I wanted him out before and I REALLY want him out now that he has come out as the leader of the black agenda."

I knew with Lott it was possible and day Russert said it a week ago Sunday, I could see this Lott coming out simply based on his lack of principle leading up to it. I expected it during the agenda push, but this is better for the GOP and conservatives.

I understand the reason why you have no time for any kind of compromise, But in the real world of politics compromise is the only way anything gets done. To think that any Republican can step in as the ML and never compromise is a sign that you have absolutely no idea how Washington D.C. operates.

For this president to get most of his agenda passed in his first two years in office is a minor miracle when you consider what this country has been through. Trent Lott deserves his share of the credit for this success. Sure we can all belly ache over a few of the compromises that did not go our way, But the overall success in these last 2 years is nothing short of incredible. We have seen our majority in the Senate stolen away and the constant drumbeat that George W. Bush stole the 2000 election and yet in no time at all the tables have turned in our favor, and we now have the majority in all three branches of the Government. A major accomplishment IMHO

For you to start painting anyone who compromises in Congress as a RINO is rediculous. I agree that Trent Lott has to go, But it's not because of his performance as the ML, but for the way he has handled himself after he made his remarks at Thurmonds B-Day Party. I've listened to all of you "My way or nothing" types for too long and you usually vote for candidates that couldn't garner any more votes than Ralph Nader

Because I THOUGHT this argument was about whether Trent Lott was a racist. At least, that's what it started out over. Have we now moved on to his other sins?

REMEMBER... Thurmond's birthday party? SEE... this is how it starts. Throw out a stupid remark, get everyone talking about it. Then, the more he tries to fix what everyone is saying is a problem no matter what he does it makes it worse. There is no way he can win.

Now we are talking about how bad he LOOKED and what he said on BET. If he had refused to go on BET he would have been tarred as a bigger racist. THAT IS THE WHOLE POINT. IT WORKED AGAIN!

I am an Independent Conservative Constitutionist Christian and have voted in general elections for no one other than Republicans. It is not *JUST* the compromise that offends me; it's *HOW* he compromises. And, for the record, Lott has redefined the art of compromise. I fully understand how DC works and I liked it better when we had leaders that persuaded with logic and passion. RINOs are part of life, but letting them lead de facto is unacceptable if the party is ever going to gain generational majorities like the RATS have. If you believe that Lott has done a good job as Leader, then that is you opinion, which I presume comes from your 'moderation'. If you are upset with the Lott only *NOW*, then you can understand why I have been for years, because this is *SO* predictable. In fact, I did predict this, to the *TEE*.

You are saying if people want to vote they have to pass some kind of test now? I wonder if the RATS know that? I believe they were passing out freebies in Louisiana to get people to vote. You better call them and tell them to stop that because those people didn't study the issues.
