Chretien formally signs Kyoto ratification

OTTAWA -- Prime Minister Jean Chretien officially signed Canada on to the Kyoto protocol on Monday, a move supporters say is a world-saver and opponents call an economic disaster.

The formal signing ceremony in Chretien's Parliament Hill office was as brief as the political debate has been long.

''Because we believe in international institutions, we believed that we could play a positive role,'' Chretien said after he signed the document. ''This is very important for future generations.''

The final step remains for Environment Minister David Anderson to fly the ratified document to New York on Tuesday for presentation to the United Nations.

The agreement commits Canada to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to six per cent below 1990 rates by 2012. That would require a cut of 20 to 30 per cent from current levels.

This man is a moron. Unfortunately it will have a negative impact on the United States as well, because it will indefinitely delay development of the tar sands.

No it won't. Tar Sands are well underway and Husky Oil just announced a big expansion in spite of this Coyote nonsense. There is no implementation plan in place and the Liberal louts in Ottawa will be hard pressed to come up with a plan that satisfies anyone but the Froggies. Basically, it is all about Quebec again and Albertans will not calmly accept a plan which negatively impacts the oil patch.

This must be part of their strategy to prove their superiority to the USA all the way to bankruptcy court.

I hope Alberta has the guts to resist this! The other
provinces are on a rapid decline into "third World" status.

"The formal signing ceremony in Chretien's Parliament Hill office was as brief as the political debate has been long. "

Stupid reporting, this was rammed through with nearly NO debate, and calls for a First Minister's Conference on it were rejected hard and fast.

This will wind up being either the Liberals or Canada's death warrent. Alberta will not stand for this one bit.
