The Killing Of Matthew Shepard Was A Free Political Commercial

I'm going to keep beating Freepers over the head with this notion. The Left is renting free space in your head with crap like this, and they're not going to quit anytime soon.

This is the equivalent of a Pepsi commercial, except that Katie Couric is dancing around topless with an ice-cold can of Racism, and we can't wait to drink it.

Dismiss this for what it is - free advertising given to the Democrats by their political comrades-in-arms in the media.

I really, really, REALLY don't care what the left is doing or saying here. I have my own, independent opinion of the matter, and that in turn is in line with quite a few conservative commentators on the subject - whether or not Lott is a racist, and only he knows for sure, he has time and time again shown poor judgement, and this occurrence is only the most obnoxious. And since he cannot learn when to shut up and not damage his party, he should go as majority leader.

Your attempts to portray this as a liberal matter are not supported by the facts.

Are you happy that to save his own ass Lott is going to try to pass hate crime legislation to prove he's not a bigot. Also he's talking about passing other legislation to help minorities.

While I want Lott to go, you are right that this has grown beyond him - into an unleashed typhoon of the politics of personal destruction....aided and abetted by the liberal media.

I believe the lib/dems have determined that this is an issue they can use to divide the country in half again - against this President. It matters not now what Lott or anyone else has to say. I believe that this president doesn't see race as a partisan issue, but is going to be forced to 'take the issue away' from the lib/dems now.

It won't be enough to hope folks are 'distracted' with the war and terrorism. The lib/dems will soon be calling R's the terrorists and saying they are 'at war' against racism.

The universe of politics seems to have spun out of control on this one. It would take quite a significant event (in our own backyard) to get the press and libs to can the harping on racism. I expect to hear about it throughout the next congressional session and well into the fall elections.

>>Companies and people pay millions of dollars a year to advertise their products in print and television media. They do this for a reason: consumers remember when they see a product advertised. <<

Exhibit A of why Lott must go. He's a walking soundbite.

One thing that Lott said that sent up a red flag with me is that he vowed to "work to undo" the wrongs he did with his speech.

Does that mean passing legislation to "prove" he's not a racist? Hate crimes legislation, etc?

Once again, Lott makes a loaded statement and dosen't stick around to explain exactly what he meant.

Lott must go.

You would be correct except Trent deserted the people, the U.S. Constitution and the House Managers in 1998 in the sham trial of William Blythe Clinton IV.

Trent will be lucky to stay in the Senate, no more.

Why do you suppose that under the Leadership of Trent Lott, the GOP never forcefully attacked Senator "Sheets" Byrd, or Clinton mentor Fulbright? It's not just the press that's given the party of Jim Crow a pass.

The GOP never could and never would mount an offensive against Democrat racism and double-standards so long as Trent Lott was anything more than just one of our Southern Senators.

The Left has misplayed this in the long run. We will be stronger as a party with Lott on the back bench.

I was wondering why the Dems are beating this dead horse as an issue. Of course because the media is giving it some traction. It helps sooothe their wounds from their election losses.
Was also wondering why Gore dropped out of the race earlier than his January deadline. Except for a war in Iraq, the Lott/Republicans are racists news frenzy became the best cover for him to do it. Gore could fade out sight easier as the media is just reporting his stepping out, but not harping on it. He's able to slide in under the Lott story, the one the media really wants. If he opted out during the cover of the Christmas news vacuum, he would have looked too political and taken some heat. If he waited till the Iraq war to drop out, he would look like a coward.

This tempest in a teapot about Trent Lott is, and it is a multi-million dollar gift from the left-wing media that will keep on giving to the Left.

Welcome to the world, Sleeping Beauty. Freepers have been complaining about this forever, remember the discussions of Campaign Finance Reform?, and so has Rush and many conservative commentators. Are you aware of Truth in Media and its various cousins? There have been thousands of words of FR about this very subject.

Yet, it not only has very little impact on freepers it is probably the most often used jumping off point for posted articles. Just because the bulb just went off above your head doesn't make it news, it just illustrates how unaware you have been.

They're not messin' with MY head but you're right; they're getting away with political murder. Where was the outrage when Sen. Byrd used the "N" word on national television?! Republicans are TOO NICE!!!!!!

...and Trent Lott was just dumb enough to set himself up as the star of that commercial. Sucks for him.

(P.S.: As much as I enjoy the mental image of Katie Couric dancing around barechested, I wouldn't let her do my political thinking for me. I can't even remember the last time I watched "Today".)

This tempest in a teapot about Trent Lott is, and it is a multi-million dollar gift from the left-wing media that will keep on giving to the Left.

The only problem with this is that Bush and Rove are both pushing the Media and the Republican Senators to take Lott out. They are doing it behind the scenes. But they are indeed doing it.

Bush and Rove intend to make the Republican party the permanent majority party. They apparently don't think they can do that by taking public opinion to the right. They look like they are going to take the Republican party left. We now have seen the Kennedy education bill, CFR, and soon to be free prescription drugs for elders. President Bush on the RNC.Com site is pushing health care for the poor.

This is a very good opportunity to move the Republican party left. With Jesse Helms, Strom Thurman and Phil Graham gone, Bush and Rove see Lott's screw up as a way to get rid of another conservative leader and replace him with a moderate. Bill Frist is the moderate choice. Frist is well to the left of Lott. Remember we now have Libby Dole, McCainiac Lindsay Graham, Sununu in place of Smith, and a more liberal replacement for Phil Graham. We have a Talent instead of an Ashcroft and we now have a Coleman. In my own state of Ohio Senators Voinovich and Dewine are a lot closer in beliefs to 1970 Democrats than 1970 Republicans. The Republican party will be a lot more liberal in January as it was more liberal after 2000. Lott does not fit in with the plans for an increased role for government intervention in education, health, and social engineering. He will have to go. With McConnell and Nickles feuding, it should be a cake walk for Frist.

It is a brilliant strategy. Keep the loyalty of the right while picking up support of the left. I think that both Rove and Bush think they can move the Republican party so it takes its half of the political spectrum from the middle. That would leave two splinter groups on the left and right neither of which could win or even defeat a candidate of the center or center left.

The only fly in the ointment is if Lott decides to throw some crap in the game by resigning or becoming a Democrat. Lott has told Bush he would resign his senate seat if removed. He has also said he will serve out his term and not resign his senate seat. The Senate democrats including Daschle have been very nice to Trent. It has been my experience in both politics and poker to never believe what other players say during a game. They tend to fib, bluff, and false promise a Lott. I don't think Bush and Rove understand that yet.

It is particularly difficult for those of us who believe in the right of the conservative cause to stomach. But it has been the case since 1932. Both parties are moving to the left and perhaps there will be a new center some what to the left of what was the center in the last century.

America has embraced the social policies of FDR and LBJ. They are now the third rail of politics.

I think Bush and Rove think is time to move Republicans another increment toward what the media calls moderation.

It should be an interesting ride. Don't forget your left turn signal.

As I said on another thread, this whole affair has the stink of an all night bull session at the DNC headquarters after the November election, with James Carville presiding. "How do we regain upper hand, how do we energize our base, how do we dominate the marketplace of ideas while being in the minority?"

I predicted here in November that the RATS would recover quickly.

It's been a calculated hit-job since Day 1. Does anybody think that if Trent Lott stepped away from the position of Majority Leader that this will all go away?

Wait till Pickering and other Bush's judges come up for confirmation hearings. If they oppose affirmative action, they will be accused by the Democrats and the leftie media as being Jim-Crow loving segragationists.

This "scandal" is just like what happened to Clarence Thomas back in 1991. The media's effort to smash a Republican President and the Republican Party. It worked in 1991 and, sadly, it's working again in 2002.

The Trashing Of Trent Lott Is A Free Political Commercial

The wet dream of democrat/RINO "Campaign Reform" come true! The media sets the agenda and censures the most rascist democrat history imaginable (KKK Byrd's "N" word commentary, Hillary's "Jew B*st*ard" and "n-word" ravings, and Jesse Jackson's "Hymietown" slurs come instantly to mind!)

That being said, Lott's butt-boy relationship with the democrats, his disgraceful performance during the impeachment, and his general disgusting Mississsippi trial lawyer smarminess are intolerable. Dude's got to be replaced!
