Think of it like this. Each of us is defined by our education, culture we're brought up in, tastes and preferences. This is why first generation immigrants speak the mother ongue when they're excited or at home - why they follow old customs, old holidays, use old recipes, etc.

For people with involvement, I haven't the slightest concern with expressions of heritage or pride in tradition.

For people who want to restore their national traditions within the framework of American society, i haven't a gripe either.

However, I do have a problem with a guy with a German last name but no German tradition in his family, nor any knowledge of German life expressing "pride" at the expense of other national groups.

I understand. I would note additionally that it used to be the case that first-generation immigrants insisted that English be used at home, especially with their children because speaking it ensured a greater chance of success.

Due to multiculturalism and bias against white European culture, this is no longer true. This has created an environment in which non-assimilation has a much greater chance of success than it used to.

If this is not addressed, and soon, we will balkanize.

Do you mean German pride? I'm having trouble figuring out your POV. Anyway, this pride thing is most unearned. I was born with five different old world national ethnic lines, should I have pride for being born? Gimme a break. It's like having pride for being born rich, or poor, or with a club foot. If you want to be proud of something, be proud of what is accomplished by someone you mentor. I think we are confusing pride here with not being ashamed. Put everyone on equal footing, even the guy with the club foot, and give them a chance to proove what's in their hearts. When they show you good or bad, move to advance or deny them. BTW, I love Mexican birthday parties best of all ethinic celebrations, and I have no genetics to cling to there. Love oom-pah-pah polkas in the Hafbrau House too. I think there some old German blood in me, but who cares?

Why would you have a problem with this individual whom did not retain German traditions, however had adopted "American" traditions but had knowledge of and pride in his heritage. After all he is the result of German gene's that have been passed down since creation. His gene's were there with the Huns at the gates of Rome.

Race is a biological reality. Race is not merely an idea as you seem to believe. Tell me also how expressing pride in ones self zeopardizes others of a different genetic make-up. Do you think that a Russians pride somehow zeopardizes you?
