Taxes really have nothing to do with this. Who in their right mind can work for $3 a day in the US?

a Dallas-based company that processes insurance forms for Aetna, opened the first data-processing center in Accra, the capital of Ghana. Workers are paid for each form processed, earning between $1 and $3 a day.
How long until this system is hacked and your medical records are spread worldwide?

Has anyone had the 'pleasure' of dealing with a tech support staff based in India?

Let's just say I'm glad that these numbers are toll-free, since 80% of the conversation with their crack tech support staff in India is "Could you repeat that? I can't understand you."

Of course the massive waste of time/frustration on my part makes the comment that "they do a better job" a bit agitating.

Does Dell offer tiered support contracts? They could offer a pay service and keep some of the jobs here. Is it worth $100 to you so that you're not on hold for an hour and talking to someone that can't speak English?
It would help out the morale at Dell's call centers here as that would filter out the "I can't get the cup holder to come out" calls.

Sorry, taxes are one of the underlying issues, another is minimum wage.

Yes I'd work for $3 an hour if I couldn't get another job. Better to make some money instead of none.

I'm sure a paid contract is a good idea for a business that can't afford the down-time, but since I call tech support once every few years, I certainly can't justify paying more for it.

I do wonder what % of the calls are of the 'idiot' variety, though, as I used to work tech support when I was in college and the vast (90%+) majority of the questions weren't of the "cup holder" variety.

And better that that $3/hour goes into our economy rather than India's.

Do you think HSBC cares how difficult it is for you?

The person that told me this today says they even give them news and cultural lessons along with with English classes so they can have "small talk " with you

Will you work for $3 a day?

As I have said elsewhere, Americans better be willing to work for 5 cents an hour if they want to remain comptetetive in a global economy, that goes for white collar as well as blue collar jobs.

In 50 years there will be only two classes left. The very rich and the rest of us peasants.

Yes.

Now, if minimum wage wasn't an issue and the companies had enough capital to expand to another worker base without laying off more expensive US employees in order to increase production, that would be fine. Expanding jobs to the world market is a good thing.

The problem really is the United States is in an artificially inflated economy (due to the existence of a welfare state/minimum wage) and is in the midst of self correction. However, if jobs are taken off of US soil and moved to foreign markets just because of minimum wage laws, it will do nothing but starve the inflated US economy, and create much more complex problems.

$3 an hour, sure. I'll work for that.

Everything costs as much as it does because of minimum wage and other restrictive economic forces anyways.

Yes they are both underlying issues but the main one is cost of living. It just costs more to live in the US than it does in India or China. Plus in China what are you going to do when The State says "Go work in this factory" Tell them no?
Btw, it was $3 a day for the African form enterer.

Yea... you end up correcting their junk.

My multi-media division was getting all its work sent to India.

"The economy's bad, and that's a big reason why," said Peggy Cripps, who assembled computers at Dell's manufacturing plant in Nashville for about two years before quitting in early 2001 after being turned down for a promotion. "Everything eventually will go overseas. That means we won't have anything. We'll go to McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) and flip burgers for $7 an hour with no benefits."

I wonder how many Dell computers we will be able to buy as we flip burgers for $7.00 an hour..........
