Lott gets challenged, the majority of GOP senators will vote for ANYONE else, Lott loses, Lott quits, MS Gov (a Dem) appoints a Dem, it's 50-50 again, and Lincoln Chaffee switches (or McCain votes with the Dems).

So, when does Daschle take the reins again? January?

Twice the electorate tries to create a GOP Senate, and twice the GOP finds a way to lose. The GOP... the Cincinnati Bengals of world politics.

(Let's see who we can thank... Jeffords for switching... Lott for "power-sharing"... Ashcroft for not standing up against the appointment of the Widder Carnahan in 2000... SCONJ for gross injustice and not recusing themselves when the sent $$ to The Torch's and to Lautenberg campaigns... Tim Hutchison for picking exactly the right moment to drop his wife for his hottie... Thune for not challenging SD... Hawaii for electing a dead woman for Senator (or were they allowed the last-minute switch,too?)... Zell for not switching like many of Georgia's other right-minded representatives... McCain and/or Chaffee for undermining their party and their constituents for their own ambitions... Lott, again, for repeating his poorly chosen words... Lott, yet again, for putting his wounded pride above his party...

Every time, it's JUUUUUUST enough to keep Daschle the Obstructionist in control of keeping America soft, weak, and dependent. Thanks, all.)

Don't forget the party infighting that cost Terrell the Louisiana Senate seat.

"Lott gets challenged, the majority of GOP senators will vote for ANYONE else"

Not so. For Lott to fall his support has to drop to less than 25 other Republican Senators. I haven't seen any indication so far that this will happen. Nickles is making a bold play and it is all or nothing for him in terms of getting other Senator's votes. At this point I'm betting Nickles will get only a handful of Senators to support him. Even more likely is that he will just quietly back away if his headcount doesn't rise above single digits.

It takes somebody to beat somebody.

Now if the President gets involved then everyhing changes. Over to you GW.
