We have a mess on our hands, not just caused by Lott, but by the dems who now think they have a political advantage. Frist will push Bush's agenda and do a fine job of it and then will leave the field open to Lott, McConnell, and Nichols to fight it out over the position once this firestorm has died down.
It's the very best solution possible. We didn't make this mess but we're going to have to clean it up. It's the only solution that will allow everybody but the dems and the race baiters to win.
If they had both Chafee and McCain ready to bolt, they would have bolted, and Lott would have been left alone for now (so he'd remain the face of the Senate Repubicans come 2004). Similarily, if nobody was ready to bolt yet, they wouldn't risk getting a majority leader who is willing to lead and definitely wouldn't risk losing the issue that Lott's become.
Yes I did...I just picked that out because I felt it to be the most pertinent to this discussion.
Frist would hold the position while the party has a chance to straighten this mess out.
Marking time is awful strategy. We're the majority party, and it is time to consolidate that majority. We MUST take the initiative NOW.
The sole purpose is to give us some time.
We don't need time for waiting...that would only serve the Democrats. We own the government...it's time we did something with it, dammit!
He is the only one with enough political savy to run this gamit without losing Chafee or McCain and he's only going to be in the senate until the end of his current term.
Baloney. I could give you a long list of Frist's bone-headed errors of the last two years as head of the Senatorial Committee, if I thought it would serve any of us to do so. i would just as soon you didn't force me to delineate them right now for the sake of unity.

Another squish moderate who works against conservative interests in the Leader's job isn't going to make any of that go away...it will only exascerbate the problems.

Firestorms never end in DC, they just shift around to new parts of the forest. Do the right thing for the long-term and things will work out just fine down the road.
