Right now the Senate is 48-1-51..if Lott leaves it would be 49-1-50 if the Rat Gov can appoint a Senator, in other words a 50-50 Senate with Cheney as tie-breaker (and no other Repub bolting)........btw...I read on FR that the Gov of Mississippi has 90 days to call for special elections if Senator retires and cannot appoint.....does anyone know for sure?

Normally, their is a special election within 90 days. However, in a year when their is a state-wide election (which 2003 is in Mississippi) then the governor can appoint through the November election.
