And I can't believe that you believe, that the issue is whether Lott is a racist. He's not a racist. He is, rather, a complete idiot whose inability to use even a modicum of common sense has damaged his party terribly. This whole, absolutely unnecessary fiasco is the work of one Trent Lott. Nobody else.
Folks, y'all got to face it. Anyone alive in the Southern States prior to around 1970 was a segregationist. Right wrong or indifferent it is a fact. You can look into the background of any white Southerner that was old engough to know what was going on around him or her and you will find something that they said or did about segregation. It is a simple fact.
All college fraternites were segregated, they still are today. Sure, you'll find a token black here and there but the blacks know that they are not welcome in most fraternities and they go else where. Why do you think we still have "historically black" colleges? You think that you have to look in some old year books and you see some black faces? They are still black and will remain so. North or South.
The South and the Southern people have come a long way since then. Turning the Senate over to Tom Daschel is not a solution to Lott not looking before he lept.
Why? Well because his recent comments got reporters searching Lexus/Nexus for past comments, etc. Many including the reporter from Time Magazine that reported the Fraternity deal had assumed that Lott had grown over the past forty years. She assumed those years were behind him. When all the other stuff started dripping out, it makes everything else fair game.
Lott did it to himself. He has all but totally self destructed. Now its only a matter of does he take us all with him.
